John was part of my life and I was part of his for 22 or 23 years. He was young enough to be my son, but old enough to be my teacher. Even as I write this, it’s hard to believe he won’t be greeting me at the clinic with a big bear hug today. In all the time I knew him, his inquisitive mind and his high energy were the things that stayed the same. When I met John, he was a college kid on a football scholarship who was going to be an MD. Even then, his memory of names of muscles, bones, tendons was mind boggling. He was always eager to learn, whether that was from his mentors in the gym or the people around him. I was his client when he had to give up his dream of playing professional football. I was his client when he was working through the philosophical disconnect between his pre-med coursework and his ongoing training as a personal training. Later, I got to be his client when he became a Doctor of Physical Therapy and he first opened Integrative Physiotherapy. Finally, I got to help him celebrate as he opened his own clinic, grew his business and started hiring other talented therapists. I got to see him achieve his goals. Along the way, he and the amazing crew he put together have enabled me to achieve fitness goals and recover from miscellaneous injuries though the years. At 76, I have John and good fortune to thank for my health. Physical therapy has kept me virtually free of surgery and provided solutions MD’s never did. Jen, I was really glad when you and John became a couple, because I think very highly of you as well, and you’ve been part of a lot of his personal journey. I was delighted for the two of you when you got married, and I hoped you would have a long and happy life together. The reality of his accident less than a year later is so harsh, I can’t begin to express how sad it makes me.
