I fondly referred to Janos as my “Guru”. Ours was a unique bond. It started through postal letters in the mid-1990’s when I was doing PhD in India, and was curious about synkinematic microscropy. It was quite motivating to receive a video-cassette from Janos of his experiments, which I still preserve affectionately. It was only in 2006 that I got my first opportunity to shake hands with him in Aachen, after which we kept meeting regularly in our respective institutes (in India and Germany) and at conferences in Europe. Little that I realize that the dinner we had along with our mutual friend, Chris Hilgers in Karlsruhe last summer, would be our last one together. Everything that starts, must end. But not so fast! We lost a great scientist in Janos at a “not very old age of 69”. He still had ideas and creativity to share with us. And he still had the motivation and energy to mentor students and teach. The Geoscience community, particularly the Structural Geology fraternity, will miss you Janos. Personally, I have lost a dear friend. Manish A. Mamtani (IIT Kharagpur, India)
