Dr Jonathan Nicholls, Registrary of the University of Cambridge from October 2007 to December 2016, and Emeritus Fellow of Emmanuel College, passed away on 14 March 2022. Jonathan was Registrar and Secretary of the University of Birmingham (2004-2007) and Registrar at the University of Warwick (1999-2004). Most recently, he was Senior Higher Education Adviser at FutureLearn, the Open University's digital courses platform.

Like many others, I was deeply saddened by the news of Jonathan's passing. And like many others, I owe him a great deal. He was wonderfully supportive to me when I was Deputy Head of School and Acting University Librarian. Despite his busy schedule, he took time out to come and speak to our doctoral students about university administration and the importance of the Humanities to it - a talk I still have in my file and read from time to time. And he was always quietly but very definitely supportive - in small and large ways. It was a privilege to have known Jonathan. He was a very special person and colleague and he touched so many people's lives and careers.
