It is a platitude that “you could never meet a nicer man”, but in Don’s case, it rings true.
I first meet when Don when he joined Jettainer. I immediately liked him. In fact, I can’t remember ever considering Don as anything other than a friend. A breath of fresh air, Don was naturally customer focused and solution oriented. He instinctively understood the need to build a relationship and quickly took over as the point man for operational issues, a smart move. He got to learn about the industry and what made his customer’s tick. A true professional, as my supplier I trusted him wholeheartedly and he never let me down. Ultimately, he made me look good at my job.
On his many visits to Abu Dhabi and when the work was done, Don and I would always find the time to hang out. We’d often have dinner and perhaps too many drinks, long into the evenings. We had a lot of common ground and would swap stories of our life experiences. I’d air my work frustrations and Don would patiently listen.
On a few occasions he joined my family on the weekends at the golf club. Hot sun, cold beer and chilling in the pool. Our children, who took to and remember Don, are of similar age to the twins and he would always talk with pride, enthusiasm and a little sparkle in his eyes about Susi and the boys. It seemed as if somehow, he was always working his way home to snatch some precious time with his young family.
They were good times but, nothing lasts forever, I left Etihad and Don moved on too. Regardless, Don never became a stranger. Whenever we met each other on the trade show circuit, there never felt to be any of the barriers that time or changing roles often creates. Rather, with ease, we’d always simply pick up where we’d left off.
Farewell Don.
