From Jane Liddell - read at the event on the 10th June
Dave liked nothing more than to ‘tease’ our minds. He really got us all thinking, thinking widely and deeply about life’s important questions.
He would start us off with a teasing question to get things going. ‘Does Common Sense exist?’, ‘Why do countries have borders?’, ’What’s wrong with eugenics?’. Then he would guide us through our spoken thoughts, always listening and gently encouraging and including us all. Sometimes, he would offer his own thoughts and experiences. They were always interesting and, more often than not, insightful.
Long after the class, I would be thinking about Dave’s ideas and those of our diverse group. In fact, during the 4 consecutive courses I took with him, it became a bit of a thing in my house that I would be heard saying, ‘Dave says this’, or ‘Dave says that’: ‘Show kindness in everyday life’, or, ‘The line is drawn when harm is done to others.’ Apparently simple ideas, but deeply moving when you stop to think about them.
Dipping into philosophy with Dave, prompted me to put pen to paper in order to make sense of my ideas. I once did a write up of one of our sessions which had been prompted by Dave’s starter question, ‘What is infinity?’ Here’s a short extract:
‘Dave postulated a theory of consciousness where each person has a unique energy configuration which can come together with others in ‘a sea of minds’.
Whatever Dave’s belief in an afterlife, I hope that he may well be part of this ‘sea of minds’; his mind would be a wonderful inclusion and a fitting place for such a warmly-loved person.
