Brian Hughes

26 mei 1963 - 1 juni 2018

The NHC community is deeply saddened by the loss of our colleague, friend, and leader. Brian Hughes tragically passed away on Friday, June 1, 2018. Brian joined NHC in 1988 and over the course of the next 30 years had an enormous impact on this organization. Brian was widely respected by his peers and deeply admired by all of us who had the privilege of knowing him. A Celebration of Life service is planned for June 23, 2018, at 2 pm on Mount Seymour at the Enquist Lodge, 1700 Mt Seymour Road, North Vancouver, BC.

I still can't believe Brian is no more with us! Brian was the technical chair for the 2017 CSCE Hydrotechnical conference in Vancouver. I remember he arranged a tour at the Northwest Hydraulic Consultants lab at Vancouver. We did exchange few emails, had some professional conversations and social gathering at the conference. My deepest sympathy and condolences for the family.

Brian was the first face I saw from NHC. I had flown into SeaTac for an interview and somehow came out the wrong door. Brian hopped out of Tom Demlow's vehicle to try to track me down while Tom circled back around. After locating me, Brian waited with me until we were both picked up. After starting in the Seattle lab, Brian became a mentor for me. Even though we were separated by a couple hundred miles, he helped me navigate my new responsibilities. I appreciated his patience and level head when working through my problems. I'll always remember the conferences we attended together at HydroVision or Dam Safety. I regret not thanking him for everything he did to help me.

NHC Ski Trip to Apex, must have been 10 years ago now. I hadn't skied or snow-boarded much in my life at that point. Brian spent several hours on the 'bunny hill' with me teaching me how to snowboard, showing great patience. Not long after he taught me how to ski at Seymour, and gave me a pair of his old Rossignol Skis - impossibly narrow and with pointy tips! I still use those skis today and I remember Brian scrunching his face and shaking his head (you know the look!) when I told him that last year. Well, I'll not give up those skis now, and though I might by a new pair (eventually), I'll always do at least one B1 memorial rip down the slopes each year. Not the deepest memory to be sure, but one II'll never forget.....and I'll never forget you my friend. Des
