I knew Alan only in the context of him being a neighbour to my elderly mum in Charminster, where he has most recently lived. Alan was friendly at the outset, a chap unlike anyone else in the apartment block, he quickly revealed himself to be a gentle giant. Volunteering to help my mum if ever she should need a hand, it was a great comfort to me to know that there was someone around who she could turn to.
Always sunny and polite, the last time I saw Alan he was just going out on his Harley, looking absolutely dapper! He suggested I park in front of his garage because all the visitor parking at the block was taken. Such a gent! He will be sadly missed by the residents of Charminster. We are all better for having known him.
