THE LIFE AND TIMES OF PA SOLOMON OLUMINOLA OLUWOLE
Pa Solomon Oluminola Oluwole was born into the popular family of Oluwole of Sagamu, Ogun State. The Oluwole family migrated from Ojowo quarters of Ijebu Igbo to Sagamu, Remo. The family name was formerly Onaile and was changed to Oluwole consequent to the conversion of their forebears to christianity. The members of the family were amongst the first to warmly receive Methodist missionaries who visited Sagamu and subsequently embraced their faith.
Pa Solomon Oluminola Oluwole popularly called “SO” was born on the 30th of July 1929. His parents were Chief Samson Alfred Oluwole (The Balogun of Remo) of Itunla quarters and his mother was Mrs Emily Oluwole (Nee Soile) of the Batoro quarters of Sagamu.
He attended the Isale Oko Methodist Primary School in Sagamu and Eko Boys High School, Lagos for his secondary education. He thereafter learnt printing and subsequently worked with the Ogunsanwo printing press and the CSS press in Lagos for several years before establishing his own printing press which he named “Handerson Printers” after his first son. He was the Chairman of the Akoka zone of the “Professional Printing Association” for several years before his retirement at the age of eighty five.
He married Miss Ololade Ajike Davies an indigene of Lagos state in 1957. The marriage was blessed with seven children and lasted for 63 years until his passing in 2021. He was a committed and active member of the Hoares Memorial Methodist Church, Yaba, Lagos.
Pa Solomon Oluwole loved and enjoyed life, he loved music and was a good dancer. He loved several genres of music such as highlife, Juju, Apala and Gospel. Some of his favorite artists were Chief Ebenezer Obey, Chief Sunny Ade, Late Chief Haruna Ishola, Late Chief Rex Lawson, Late Bobby Lawson, Late Chief I.K Dairo and Fela Anikulapo- Kuti whom he and his wife frequently watched perform. He won several awards as the best dancer and the best dressed gentleman frequently during the defunct ‘’ Art Alade Show”, organised by the National Television Authority, Victoria Island Lagos.
He loved travelling and consequently visited several states across Nigeria, several countries on the West African coast, Israel, the United Kingdom and several states in the United States of America where he became a citizen by naturalization. He consequently spent several years living in Chicago, Illinois. He loved football and was an active member of the fans club of the moribund “Super Stores Football Club” of Lagos and travelled under its umbrella whenever and wherever they played outside Lagos. He was very current with political issues as well as current affairs, and his favorite channel was CNN while his favorite newspaper was the Nigerian Tribune. He was an amateur boxer at Alakoro, Lagos.
He was a committed father who spent quality time with his children and grandchildren. He was a well loved and respected community leader who opened his door to strangers, a father figure to several people and was fondly called “grandpa” by neighbours.
He was a die-hard Awoist who printed and distributed almanacs, calendars & diaries with Chief Obafemi Awolowo’s picture annually till his retirement. He was a very devoted christian who loved to pray and worship God. He spent the last two nights of his life worshipping God. He passed unto glory peacefully in his sleep in the afternoon of 13th
August 2021 at the ripe age of 92.
He is survived by his wife Mrs Ololade Ajike Oluwole, six children, fourteen grandchildren and four great grandchildren, his younger sister Mrs Juliana Adenike Awosile (Nee Oluwole), several cousins including - Chief (Mrs) Adeseike Adetula (Nee Oluwole) and Chief Olubayode Oluwole, several nephews and nieces.
May his gentle soul rest in peace in the bosom of the Lord.
