Renée Geyer

September 11, 1953 - January 17, 2023

Australian jazz, blues, r&b & soul icon Renée Geyer, the singer with an active six-decade career - best known for songs such as ‘It’s A Man’s Man’s World’, ‘Say I Love You’ and ‘Heading in the right direction’ - passed away peacefully among family and friends on January 17 after complications following hip surgery at age 69. In a tribute on Twitter, Australian singer and TV personality Marcia Hines described Geyer as “A game changer. A soul diva. My sister in song. We have just lost a person who possessed one of the greatest voices I have ever heard.” The American blues singer guitarist Bonnie Raitt, who worked with Geyer in the US said ‘Australia’s incomparable Renee Geyer was one of the greatest singers I’ve ever known” Colin Hay (formerly of Men At Work) said Renée holds a unique place in Australian musical history. “What a woman, what a singer! If beauty has a sound it is the voice of Renee. The US had Aretha, the UK Dusty Springfield. We had Renée! he said.

I had the pleasure of touring with Renée in the early 90s. We had done 3 shows as support so far and not seen Renée at all except for on stage. Once we got to Gisborn we had 2 days off. I was standing by the pool and I saw Renée approaching me, as soon as she was close enough her first words to me were, Why are you wearing that ( A star of David carving around my neck ) My mother was Jewish, was my reply. Ohh that's fine then, was Renée's come back, she hugged me and the tour rolled on. Best tour I ever did, thank you Renée for your music and letting me be a small part of it. Renee was the very first singer I ever crushed on, her music , her beauty, her soul. I followed her career for 50 years and was deeply saddened by her loss. I named my first born after her. Renee will be sadly missed by me and many many others around the world that she has touched. She will continue to live through her music amd in our heart. Farewell beautiful.
