Lynda “Pie” Rutledge Kirby (60) of Lockhart, TX passed away on Wednesday, November 30 after an arduous battle with pancreatic cancer. She died surrounded by her family and lifelong best friend. Pie was born in Dallas, TX on April 6, 1962 to David Rutledge and Nancy Olds Rutledge. She worked for many years as a homebirth midwife, passionately serving women throughout Central Texas. She was known for her tenacity and strength of spirit, her infectious sense of humor, and her loving acceptance for everyone she encountered. She is survived by her children, Cole (Anna) Kirby, and Lacy (Brandon) Jarvis as well as her beloved grandchildren, Nathaniel Kirby and Hattie and Joseph Jarvis. She also leaves behind her mother, Nancy Olds Rutledge, and her brother, Daniel (Martha) Rutledge, along with a large extended family and many dear friends. She is preceded in death by her father, David Rutledge, and her brother, John David Rutledge. Services will be held on Tuesday, December 13 at 2 pm at Sojourn Heights church in Houston, TX. In lieu of flowers, please consider following Pie’s tradition of donating to a family in need this holiday season.

We met Pie back in 2002 when I was pregnant with our daughter. We were dissatisfied with the prenatal and proposed birth care we were receiving at our hospital and were searching for options. Pie was very reassuring and encouraged us that we could have a normal birth. She had so much experience that we felt confident in her ability to guide and help us. My due date came and went, as they often do, and finally one afternoon almost 2 weeks later I went into labor. I remember my dad and sister, who had no experience with homebirth, aski no lots of questions and Pie calmly handled them all. That experience gave my sister the confidence to go on to have her own home births. We were beyond broke when Pie took us on as clients (not patients), but she worked with us to find ways for us to pay her in whatever ways we could - I did some clothes tailoring and made some curtains, cooked sometimes, and taught Cole violin lessons while my husband taught Lacy piano lessons. Every year on our daughter’s birthday we went and took a picture with Pie until we moved away. I’m so thankful to have known her as a person and as our midwife. She changed our lives for the better in so many ways. She will be greatly missed. What a loss!
