I have a whole generation-long memories to share, but I will start with my humble speech at James's funeral. "First of all,I would like to say a big THANK YOU to all strong men,who carried James on his last walk! I am deeply honoured! I shared my life with James for the past 18 years. It was not easy at first, but after some LONG years and my determination, we understood that it is better if we took care for each other, instead of making ourselves miserable, and we did that well. Mark, his brother, told me,that meeting me gave James a new purpose in life. Meeting James shaped me into the stronger woman I am today. James was the person, who always gave me the best advice, especially in relation to people. He introduced me to his friends, many of whom became my friends as well. James knew the answers to my questions, except for the ones related to English grammar, but even then James proved to be invaluable by suggesting Sotiris as my teacher.Of course, in many occasions,he told me I should ask for my money back, since I have not learned enough. Funny Jamie! James knew many people and I used to get annoyed with him, when, after only a night out with a new person,he was calling that person a friend in the morning. But looking around me today makes me reconsider my stand on friendship:he did have many friends, and he was a good friend for even more people. Yesterday, when Athina,James's niece, suggested I should say something, I did not know what to say,and now I cannot stop. James was the link between generations. He was able to talk to a child and to the grandparents of that same child about everything. My friend Ginka called him a beacon, who showed people the way into their hearts. He was like an unpaid matchmaker, really. For me James was the most important human being in my entire life.He was my light, and life, and love. Yes,he was drinking a lot;yes,he smoked even more, but hey!-we are in Greece, and the word epicurean is Greek. And I miss him like nothing else! Peace be upon you,my darling! Love you forever! Thank you!
Oh James. You will be missed you old rascal! There's a James-shaped hole in Hydra now. I have no doubt you'll continue to haunt the Port at night, and I look forward to meeting your ghost over a late-night drink. I was trying to remember how many years we've known each other - it was a while. You were a great friend to me and to Sol and our first mutual friend. Full of wit, wild stories, and barbed comments that couldn't quite hide a truly kind heart. In my mind's eye you're sitting on the steps in the early hours of the morning, sharing a last cigarette with Father Time - or perhaps that should be Thanatos. Glasses will be raised far and wide, my friend. RIP.
Our deapest and heartfelt condolences to Daniela, Marc and his family. James was a special soul full of whit, humor, laughter and intellect. He will forever be remembered by us as a very close and old friend with whom you could always have wonderful conversations over a Bloody Mary / Gin and Tonic (or maybe a toasted sandwich) and a cigarette. Lots of love, Frank, Marika, Nikolaus, Konstantin and Alexia. R.I.P. James you truly will be missed.
R.I.P. James. The old poker player. I first met him at Ingeborg Beugel place in the 90s. Great company, full of stories (may or may not actually happen, but who cares, he was a real storyteller ). Very funny and full of ridicule. Also sometimes difficult to really get access to him. Elusive and mysterious but above all charming when he allowed you into his world. A Hydra Icon has passed away. He would be the first to say: "Enjoy Life and don't hesitate, every day could be your last day". You're just a passenger. James was a very special passenger. One you'll never forget. I got this song from Ingeborg. Youcan see James in this clip. James, always in our hearts. https://youtu.be/5IUQiMqL3Ek And he would say; "One day a new guy will arrive on Hydra. A funny one, a nice one...but I presume, not that humurous as I'am (was). And: "Do you really want to die in the place we're you where born, when you also can die on Hydra ? I can't imagine. Then you are completely out of control". For everyone on Hydra make a warm and nice ceremony for James. He was one of the people who made this island so good for anyone who daily and sometimes lives on Hydra. Let's think about extraordinary people like James Saturday during the memorial service when he will be buried.

RIP dear James. We were lucky to know you for 8 years in Hydra, and we had so much great time with you. A secret, unique, accurate and brilliantly funny Brit guy. He had so much stories to tell, so much memories to share, that we always had a delightful moment together. I found this photo from 2019, one evening on our terrace in Kamini. RIP dear James.
