Our paths crossed so many times in so many ways - it began in the 80s, I listened attentively to my fellow representative Denis Sheridan at the U.N. Staff Union making sharp comments; in the 90s, we worked on the same floor for several years. Often he stopped by my office after hours to chat. He was a walking encyclopedia of homeopathic treatment and nutrition supplements. We both were active organizers in several UN Staff recreational clubs, and we attended activities at each other’s events. Our friendship continued after retirement. Denis did not like to travel out of the tri-state area, but he flew out to San Francisco to attend our son’s wedding. It made our family feel very special. The United Nation international staff has a unique bond, we are all gypsies in a sense, we are a small village of people who can understand each other instantly. The closest to this community I can think of is the New Yorkers. Denis was a New Yorker, he enjoyed music, dance, and other cultural events, he loved food, often talked about how much he enjoyed going out with his office mates to Chinatown for a feast in the early years of his service. We were also neighbors in Upper Eastside. Denis loved animals, told me that he grew up in the countryside with 12 siblings and all sorts of animals. He helped caring many pets for his friends and neighbors, our Bowie included. One time we were out of town for a few weeks, he came to take care of Bowie every day. As a night owl, he would come around 9 p.m. in his shorts and sandals, wearing a cap, walked the dog very late at night, sometimes at midnight. He always wore the baseball cap, except once at our Easter Brunch party, which he has done on a rose pink bonnet! One time we were walking on Central Park South, he stopped by to see the carriage horses. He agreed with me that he would enjoy being a coachman except he did not want to be bothered by the work to take care of the horses. I can see him now, riding high in heaven with full loads of animals as his passengers! Of course, in heaven, all the chores would be taken care of by other angles. Be free, finally, my dear friend, be free, we will meet again.

When we moved to California, Denis came to visit at least once a year until I was in my early teens. This was his first visit right after our move. 1993.

Before Denis came into my life, I didn’t know men could be safe. I didn’t know I could relax in their presence or in their strong arms. In that very important way you saved me, Uncle Denis. You gave a little girl something she needed so much and did not have. It’s no wonder I married an Irish Aries with a broad warm back and sparkling eyes. Thank you for letting me come to you. Thank you for respecting me. For all the sesame noodles, and pints of Haagen Daz honey vanilla, and trips to the Bronx Zoo, and that one Hanukkah where you bought me every single piece of the Samantha American Girl Doll set. I had no idea I could have something so totally frivolous. You taught me the joy of giving, that money can be love. This shaped my entire trajectory in life. Thank you for making an otherwise complex and often terrifying childhood simple and joyous when you were in it. I want my children to feel the way I did with you. I hope you are with Spencer in the great beyond, bossing the angels around. I will love you all my life. The only reason I should ever wish to be small again is to ride on your shoulders without a care in the world while you walk fast down the streets of New York, headed wherever it is I wanted to go. Until we meet again, “Princess Clarity” out.

Please find below obituary written by Sema: ~In Memoriam~ Denis Sheridan - (April 11, 1945-October 28, 2021) Denis Sheridan was born in Ardnaree, Balina, County of Mayo, Ireland on April 11, 1945. Mayo a county of southwestern Ireland is a land of varied terrain with large island-studded lakes, renowned for their game fishing and beauty and the naked quartzite peaks along the indented Atlantic coast, with their rugged cliffs interspersed with flat clean sandy beaches. His childhood there among botanical variety and landscape might have been the early influence in his interest in medicinal herbs which he would always recommend to his family and friends. Denis was the second (or third born) of twins of a family of twelve children born to Denis Joseph Sheridan and Bridget Murphy Sheridan. His loving brothers and sisters: Harry, Nuala, Mary (Denis’s twin), Evelyn, Eamon, Ann, Paul, Ena, Oliver, Bernadette (Berni) and Eugene survive him. Denis attended Saint Muredachs College, in Balina and studied on to go to University College, Dublin (UC) where he majored in mathematics. Denis joined the United Nations as an economist in the Department of Social Affairs when on a visit to New York. He was an international civil servant for several decades before his retirement in 2005. His UN career brought him in contact with like-minded colleagues in the international community. He was at his best in an environment where he was able to express his versatility and talents with continuous activity in the social field of the United Nations Recreational Council. He was the head of various United Nations recreational clubs which included the Tai Chi Club, the Amateur Radio Club, the Bridge Club and the Golf Club. He was also a conscientious staff rights advocate and was elected staff representative for the Department of Social Affairs. Denis conscientiously strove to improve the United Nations staff working conditions, advocating for, among other important issues, pension benefits. Later he served as the Head of the Polling Officers of the United Nations Staff Union. Denis’s love of music took him on many musical forays to all the neighboring states and boroughs of Manhattan to attend concerts. He would religiously subscribe to yearly season’s tickets to Lincoln Center - making it his home away from home. He would often, in the most spirited way, treat his friends to music by inviting them on these concert outings. Most of all, Denis was happiest with a dog or cat on his lap. His love of animals endeared him to his friends and their pets. He would often care for their pets for extended periods and advise them on their continuing care. His generous and valiant attitude, his strong will, which was evident as an elder in a family of twelve children, made him studious and knowledgeable. His generous and considerate qualities set him apart as an individual. As one of his colleague-friends said of him: “Denis Sheridan was a man of many interests, mysteries, and a facility with language which lent credence and color as he expounded on rare and obscure facts. I never asked him if he was related to the writer Sheridan, but he had an uncanny ability to provide arcane or rare information on many subjects. Denis had an unfailing sense of concern and compassion for the underdog and he always embraced justice for those who had little or no power. His sense of decency, honor, and integrity was appreciated by the many who met Denis in his far too short passage in this world.” Denis died at the Isabella Geriatric Center in Northern Manhattan on October 28, 2021 because of his advanced cancer. Deep condolences are conveyed to his loving family and to all his cherished friends. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated this Saturday, November 6th, 2021, at 2.00 pm at the Roman Catholic Church Saint Anthony’s in Hawthorne, New Jersey, with a live stream for his family and friends gathered around the world to celebrate Denis’ life and to honor his memory. Tina and Tobie, sisters, loved going on walks with Denis. Denis also enjoyed the company of my three pooches, Tina, tobie and Sally, my three musketeers. Thanks to Denis coming during weekdays for several years to take care of my zoo they had joyful companionship during the day. Thank you Denis for taking such good care of us, Tina said in 2015. I am so grateful to Denis for taking such good care of my zoo but he also enjoyed their company! We miss you Denis!

Bobina (right) and her son, Panda (right) loved having Denis pet sit during the day. they would cllmb on my work table and come and purr next to the laptop where Denis was reading the Internet. Unfortunately all my pets missed Denis during the pandemic as we were all confined. Denis really loved animals and all my pets will miss him. Denis always came out no matter the weather - in snow, rain, sleet and the damnest heat. We are all so saddend by his sudden illness and death. What a wonderful compassionate human being!

Denis took care of Tobie. In this photo we are all visiting friends in Manhattan and Tobie is enjoying Denis' company. In subsequent years Tobie always knew when Denis was arriving to the apartment even when one was waiting for Denis to come. Tobie loved Denis so much. Denis took her on long walks around the nearby parks. She is so upset that her best friend Denis passed. May his Soul Rest in Peace!

Denis with my dog Sally, one of my three dogs and two cats. Denis was wonderful to my pets and took care of my zoo, first Tobie from 2013 when Tobie stayed with Denis for a few months. After I brought my cats Bobina and Panda and tobie's sister, Tina and Sally Denis came out to Forest Hills weekdays to walk my dogs and pet Bobina who came and sat with him next to the laptop. Unfortunately, my beloved Sally died of cancer on 16 June 2016, darling Tine of failed kidneys on 2 Oct .2017 and Bobina of old age and hyperthyroid on 16 Sept 2020 just as she entered Blue Pearl emergency. They all loved Denis. Now only Tobie and Panda are alive and they are very saddened by Denis' passing.

Denis loved animals and was always willing to take care of his friends' pets. After his beloved dog Muffin died, he chose not to have another dog of his own.
