Our condolences to Ilse, Chloe and Kylie. We met in 1987 we were friends and colleagues for 32 years. How can I ever forget challenges, experiences and fun over these years? We shared so many challenges and experiences. I hope that Deon will be remembered for his contributions to Industrial/Organisatonal Psychology and for being there when he was needed.
Our most recent presentation together with Deon at the 2019 SIOPSA Conference.
September 8, 2017 Important meeting today with Karel Stanz and Deon Meiring to plan our project on Job insecurity in higher education institutions.
Here we are with Hennie Kriek, at the end of one of many sessions to update the latest version of the South African assessment centre guidelines. Without a doubt, Deon was passionate about ACs. Under his leadership, he once again put the ACSG and ACs in South Africa on the map, leaving behind an internationally recognized legacy for future committees to benefit from and build on. His commitment and loyalty to his students and colleagues was common knowledge. When he was in your corner, you know things would work out. Wow, this is a devastating loss on so many levels. Deon, may you rest in peace.
Deon invited me and my husband over to SA in 2013 to give a statistics course and he was such an amazing host! He took us over to the stadium to have a braai and watch the Springboks, we were invited to a goodbye party of a colleague, he took us on a safari trip and invited us in his home to have dinner with the family. The only day that we didn't see him during our trip was on Father's Day, which says something about his priorities :) Apart from all the things that he did for us, it was a great joy to be around him. Deon would always laugh the loudest about his own jokes. Even though the trip was years ago, we regularly thought about him and the amazing time we had in SA.
A golden oldie....IACCP 2008. Deon loved to connect with people. That is something I will always remember about him. Stilbaai en Beyerskloof Pinotage sal my altyd aan hom laat dink!
Deon / Brother / Bouzi (my nick name for him) I was searching for the perfect words to describe and honor you and the first words that came to mind was “Gentle Giant” Gentle: having or showing a mild, kind, or tender temperament or character. Giant: legendary humanlike being of great stature and strength. A living being of great size. A person of extraordinary powers. Something unusually large or powerful. How these two words stand in contrast with each other, but also how perfect they string together to describe you. “Gentle Giant” you were a caring soul, one with a genuine interest in your fellow man. You were tough and ruthless with everything you set out to accomplish but soft, tender and caring in the way you interacted with people, achieving these accomplishments. “Gentle Giant” you were a collector of these accomplishments in the form of memorabilia. When I walk into your study I can see all the memories; oupa’s old radio when we used to visit after school and listen to stories. Both oupa’s favourite warn out hats and one’s cane. Toy’s when we were young, statues and pictures of places you visited, degrees that you studied so hard for, pictures of family and even our dad’s (Desmond Walton Meiring) and his dad’s (Kelly Walton Meiring) ashes so you can remember them by and still feel close to them. “Gentle Giant” you were a super dad and a loving and supportive husband. You were a grandchild a child and a brother. You loved unconditionally. “Gentle Giant” you were a pillar of strength and you were an inspiration for us all. You have left us with a huge void, so difficult to fill. You have left us with so many unanswered questions, but that you knew. This was a memorabilia you did not want us to own or to revisit with tears, sadness or regrets. Gentle Giant Sadness now, we cry, we weep. Our gentle giant's gone to sleep. In the silence, we yet hear his sound, his feet still lumbering along the ground. He made all welcome, no growl, no bark, except when he was startled, or after dark. He asked for very little, but gave his all, right to the end, to that final call. When time comes for to take that final ride, that dreaded journey to the other side. Our journey there will bear no strife, for we know he's waiting, as he was in life. George William Savage “Gentle Giant” now the time has come to say goodbye, how I dreaded this moment. In memory you will live forever in my mind. Slaap sag, slaap rustig en jubel saam Onse Vader, Skepper en Verlosser GOD. Tot weersiens. So innig life vir jou Bouzi.
Deon and I at Neethlingshof earlier this year discussing ASSA and enjoying some good wine. Deon I will miss you.
Prof Meiring- an amazing person, mentor and lecturer. Gone too soon!
This photo from IACCP conference Canada 2018 shows Deon in one of his happy places: seated next to Fons, and getting ready for his own talk on the SAPI. :)
In my mind the story is unique and special, a tribute to a human being with a soft and kind soul...someone who drew you in and before you knew it, you were connected, part of a team, a project, a forum, a story. He was witty, so very very witty. The last time we spoke, about a week or so ago, he made me laugh so loud that people were staring at me...such a softy too, always caring, always walking that extra mile. He was the one that kindled the candle into a fire ré my involvement with SIOPSA...we shared so many stories and laughed a lot...it turns out that my story is not unique, it is everybody’s story who knew Deon, and journeyed with him in one way or the other. It hurts a heck of a lot, my heart is heavy....Deon, you made such an impact, and will continue to do so, because we still have to continue the journey, and because of what you invested in us, we can hopefully invest some of that magic in others...

In 2006, we attended the IACCP conference in Spetses, Greece. Deon held the SA colours high in his Bulls gear (also the strap on his luggage). I also remember him smuggling an olive tree back to South Africa to plant in his garden.
