Deon / Brother / Bouzi (my nick name for him)
I was searching for the perfect words to describe and honor you and the first words that came to mind was “Gentle Giant”
Gentle: having or showing a mild, kind, or tender temperament or character.
Giant: legendary humanlike being of great stature and strength. A living being of great size. A person of extraordinary powers. Something unusually large or powerful.
How these two words stand in contrast with each other, but also how perfect they string together to describe you.
“Gentle Giant” you were a caring soul, one with a genuine interest in your fellow man. You were tough and ruthless with everything you set out to accomplish but soft, tender and caring in the way you interacted with people, achieving these accomplishments.
“Gentle Giant” you were a collector of these accomplishments in the form of memorabilia. When I walk into your study I can see all the memories; oupa’s old radio when we used to visit after school and listen to stories. Both oupa’s favourite warn out hats and one’s cane. Toy’s when we were young, statues and pictures of places you visited, degrees that you studied so hard for, pictures of family and even our dad’s (Desmond Walton Meiring) and his dad’s (Kelly Walton Meiring) ashes so you can remember them by and still feel close to them.
“Gentle Giant” you were a super dad and a loving and supportive husband. You were a grandchild a child and a brother. You loved unconditionally.
“Gentle Giant” you were a pillar of strength and you were an inspiration for us all. You have left us with a huge void, so difficult to fill. You have left us with so many unanswered questions, but that you knew. This was a memorabilia you did not want us to own or to revisit with tears, sadness or regrets.
Gentle Giant
Sadness now, we cry, we weep.
Our gentle giant's gone to sleep.
In the silence, we yet hear his sound,
his feet still lumbering along the ground.
He made all welcome, no growl, no bark,
except when he was startled, or after dark.
He asked for very little, but gave his all,
right to the end, to that final call.
When time comes for to take that final ride,
that dreaded journey to the other side.
Our journey there will bear no strife,
for we know he's waiting,
as he was in life.
George William Savage
“Gentle Giant” now the time has come to say goodbye, how I dreaded this moment. In memory you will live forever in my mind.
Slaap sag, slaap rustig en jubel saam Onse Vader, Skepper en Verlosser GOD.
Tot weersiens.
So innig life vir jou Bouzi.
