Caroline was my Auntie Mame - she did things in her own way, regardless of what people thought. I always admired that about her. She carried that spirit throughout her life. She had an insatiable appetite for art - i remember getting dragged around for hours throughout galleries and museums wanting nothing more than to sit down for a meal! But her curiosity was infectious and inspiring. Most memorable was when we went to see the movie Jaws when it first came out one summer while I was visiting with her and Sol in Roslyn. We were screaming and transfixed with the special effects. Needless to say, by the end of the movie, we were convinced that the actors must have gotten paid fortunes to have sacrificed themselves in that way!! Who would give up their lives for their art??? LOL - we were clueless. Or what about sitting around the huge round table at the restaurant in Chinatown with Estelle and Sam and everyone else screaming for Har Gow!!! The poor restaurant owners couldn't bring them to the table fast enough!! And God forbid they should forget the spicy mustard!! We love you Caroline - FOREVER!!!

Invited to join by Gail Goldman, Caroline has been a member of our book club from its first year in 2006 until 2021. We have read over 150 books during those fifteen years, about 15 of them were Caroline’s selections. A sample of her choices ranged from: Herzog by Saul Bellow, Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See, Replay by Ken Grimwood, The Sound and the Fury by William Faulkner, Let the Great World Spin by Colum McCann, Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn, All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr, The Plot against America by Philip Roth, Commonwealth by Ann Patchett, and The Street by Ann Petry. In addition to her shared love of the transporting power of books, Caroline added her artist’s perspective to our book discussions. We miss her already. "Auntie" Caroline was my mom's younger sister, and the most glamorous we thought, as she was a stewardess when she was young. She wore her little hat with great panache. My brother and I grew up abroad, and when we came to visit, we'd accompany my cousins to the train station to pick her up; to greet her, we would have Neil Diamond's Sweet Caroline blaring on the cassette deck when she got into the car. I remember when she met tall, dark, and handsome Sol - on whom I had a massive crush. When he'd come a-calling at my grandma's house, I always made sure to sit next to him on the sofa. When they got married, I remember feeling so grown up when we were allowed to attend the reception. It was at a Chinese restaurant, and everyone was so dressed up and beautiful. Later in life she became quite an accomplished artist - sculpting and painting - and she and my mom - also an artist - would spend hours talking shop. Both kept very up to date on the arts and up-and-coming artists, and we would have vigorous discussions about "what was art". I remember one particular outing to a museum or gallery where there was a row of bricks stacked on the floor - not like a tower, but like a line on the floor. It was an "installation", and my mom and Caroline oohed and aahed over it, and I almost died from my eye roll, and pronounced it a scam. Her passing makes me so sad, not only because she will be missed, but also because she is the end of an era.

This memory always makes me laugh: When we surprised Caroline and Sol with the news that we were pregnant with our first, she nearly tripped and fell flat on her face with excitement. Luckily, Matt and I caught her before she tumbled and we all cracked up as we headed into the restaurant to celebrate the good news. I always loved her connection with our daughter Zoey. She would sit for hours and paint with her and have the funniest conversations. And she would *always* bring her a beaded necklace or brooch from her costume jewelry box for Zoey to add to her Fancy Nancy dress-up collection. I wish she could have been a part of Eloise's life, too. I remember being so nervous to meet Caroline for the first time when Matt introduced me 11 years ago. But she was sweet and funny, and welcomed me into the family with open arms. I will miss her.

My condolences to sol and Matt. I’ve admired Caroline my entire life. She cut my hair in camp and let me borrow her clothes later on. We worked for the same school district and spoke constantly. I will miss her greatly.
