Tony Dron

Tony Dron was a racing driver, motoring journalist and author. He was a racing contemporary and friend of James Hunt in Formula Ford before competing in saloon cars, sports cars, Porsche series and latterly historic racing cars. He won events in 24 makes and 41 models of car. The total number of wins is not known but is well into the hundreds. He wrote for Motor magazine, was editor of Classic Cars for 11 years and a Telegraph motoring contributor. He is survived by his wife Charis and children from previous marriages, Amy, William and Katy. With thanks to Jeff Bloxham for the image.

Over the years, we worked together on numerous freelance articles for the magazine, one of which was the story of the motor industry had the war not intervened. As the then production editor of Classic Cars, I had the pleasure of working with Tony when he freelanced for the title in the 1990s. A lovely guy, always affable, and a fine writer who cared a lot for what appeared in print under his byline. On one occasion, I recall, he questioned my use of the word ‘tad’ in a caption; I gently reminded him he wasn’t editor any more and he gave in! RIP, Tony.

My condolences to the family - I never did realise the family connection Will, despite the surname! I have known Tony over the years having worked in automotive PR for several Italian car companies and am very sad to hear this news.
