Professor Thomas Chen was a dedicated teacher-scientist at City, University of London for the past 11 years. He was a great colleague and a brilliant scientist, but above all, Tom was a kind gentleman whose memory we will forever cherish. He will be sorely missed by students and staff alike. After completing his PhD in Electrical Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley (United States), Dr. Chen worked on high-speed networking research at GTE Laboratories (now Verizon) in Massachusetts, USA. He returned to academia and joined Southern Methodist University (Dallas, Texas) as an Associate Professor in Electrical Engineering. In 2007, Dr. Chen was appointed Professor in Networks at Swansea University, Wales, before joining City, University of London as a Professor in Cyber Security in 2013. Professor Chen was a dear colleague, dedicated husband and a loving father. He leaves behind his wife and child, parents, and two siblings. At these difficult times our thoughts are with Tom’s family and friends.

The news of Professor Tom Chen’s passing was very shocking. He had taught a number of my modules from 2019-2024 whilst also being a valuable support whilst I was on my placement year. His positivity and the collaboration he brought in the 23/24 academic year kept the whole cohort of EEE students informed even during times of doubt and he was always at the end of a email when I needed clarity or help. From emergency revision sessions days before final year exams to advice on how to pick a final year project and make the most out of City’s resources, the impact he made on my time a City will never be forgotten. He will be dearly missed by the students and the wider City community. My condolences to his family.

So sad to hear about this! Professor Chen joined City when I joined for my first year and he was assigned as my personal tutor. We had a fair few laughs about how neither of us knew what was going on! RIP Tom

Tom had made a very important influence in my BEng EEE course 2019-2022. He was a brilliant lecturer who always strived students to take initiative and think creatively in subjects/modules such as Signal Processing and Communications at City, University of London. I will never forget how much of an impact Digital Signal Processing section of the module had on my career as an Electronics Engineer. Tom really made me care about how and where to apply Digital Signal Processing principles in engineering problems. It's an absolute pleasure to have been a student of yours. My deepest condolences.
