Subinay and I joined UNDP, Bangladesh the same year in 1992, months apart. He came with a rich NGO experience and I had come from the Government on secondment. Bangladesh was creating its new pathways in the development scenario. In UNDP we all started to talk about "paradigm shifts", together we created an ideas room in the office, for the first time together we went to spend time in the slum areas of Dhaka to develop rapid appraisals.....Subinay was one of the most collegial colleagues, a true gentleman and an inspiring development practitioner. I had the good fortune of representing Subinay as his attorney. Getting to know him was a special treat. His decency and compassionate concern for others was the mark of him as a gentleman. He will be missed.

I have known Subinay Da for more than two decades and from well before I joined the UN system. A chance encounter in a flight from New York to New Delhi when we happened to sit next to each other. Since that day, we remained in touch on and off. He was a Menor and elder brother to me, rejoiced my posting in Bangladesh and we met each time he came to Dhaka. Whenever I had a problem to deal with with no easy answers, he was my 'go to' person - always guiding me with my best interests in mind. Whenever I appeared in any Bangla Channel programmes, he would write to me with words of encouragement. I cannot just believe I am not going to have him again to help me navigate through life's challenges. I am saddened to hear that you have departed this world for the eternal world. The first time I met you was when you interviewed me for a post in UNDP. I thought to myself after the interview that I would love to work for a boss like that - visionary, sharp but pleasant and easy to converse. And I did have a great time working in UNDP Programme section under your leadership. You are a brilliant thought leader yet very humble. You don’t care about hierarchy. I was really moved by your treat to a dinner in an elegant Chinese restaurant together with your family and a Bangladeshi colleague when I came to Beijing for a workshop. You were the Country Director in China at that time and I was only a junior officer from Vietnam. It was an unforgettable memory for me and also an example of being a great people-leader that I usually refer to in my career. When I came to work in New York, I heard many more amazing stories about you from UN colleagues. It is difficult to come to terms with the fact that you already left us. You have brought many wonderful things to this world and positive impacts on many lives. Let us continue your path. Rest in peace, Subinay.

When I joined UNDP Bangladesh, I heard a lot about one senior Bangladeshi UNDP colleague, who kept his ties with Bangladesh and UNDP Country office through various personnel namely (one and only) Hashem Bhai. I was briefly acquainted with him as some of his personal effects came in Bangladesh, where I intervened to clear them from DHL. I came to know, he was elder brother of one of eminent singer of Bangladesh, named Subinay. But never met him in Bangladesh. However, between 2014 or 2015, I met him outside Bangladesh during my detail Assignment in Sri Lanka, where he was posted as Resident Coordinator. Indeed, I told myself, he was to me look like a complete Man. Amazing personality, determined, bold and through and through outspoken to make the impression with right words at the right time. He was happy with my mission report and heard that he spoke of me during than Country Director Pauline’s visit to UN HQ New York. It was a really proud moment for me to be able to create impression on him. Lastly, I was assigned the responsibility to hire him for UNDP Bangladesh on 2019-2020. I was able to process the paperwork almost in a heartbeat, simply because, I did not want to miss the chance to show my appreciation as he spoke highly of me during my mission in Colombo. This, I was able to do when I met him in Bangladesh Country Office as part of consultancy assignment. And he remembered me! Which was a real surprise for me. I cannot imagine he left us so soon without giving us a chance to say goodbye. Subinay was like reflection of UN norms and culture through his pocketbook (UN charter) which he dearly kept with him and played a UN Role Model throughout his life. He will be missed by his colleagues, friends and family. I wish him to be in a better place, wherever he is, and be in Peace and look upon us from up there and follow his guidance and wisdom.
