Stanley Lowe, OBE, JP

To the family of the Hon. Mr. Stanley Lowe, I would like to offer my sincere condolences to you. My most recent memory of “Mr. Speaker”, whom I’ve always addressed as, is that he always very particular and full of purpose. I had the pleasure of serving him at my part-time job and he affectionately made sure that he received his discount every time. I learned to save just by his mannerisms :). Mr. Speaker, you will be missed!l

My sincere condolences to Hon. Speaker Stanley Lowe, OBE, & his entire Family. Having worked at the House of Assembly as the Former Sgt. @ Arms it was a priviledge and I learnt so much about the Rules & Procedures. I enjoyed his wit & humor. He was very respectful & let the House Meetings flow. I will miss him and may God be with you all during this time.

Speaker Stanley Lowe shall always be remember by the short direct saying he would whip out during conversations with him. I enjoyed talking to him as to the direction that Bermuda is and should be heading, He always show concern for family unity as that is the best way for all Bermudians to progress. During my tenure as PLP Party Chairman 1990-2000 I found him to be fair and firm for his ruling in the House of Assembly. My wife Judy and I offer our sincere condolences to the Lowe family.

Speaker Stanley Lowe was a gentleman, and a scholar who would strive for fairness. He will be missed. Heartfelt condolences to his family. Stanley was famous for his quotes particularly by poet Edgar Allan Poe. I honour his memory with this one. " Deep into the darkness peering, long I stood there, wondering, fearing, doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before." Rest in peace my friend. May your soul soar to realms unknown.

Heartfelt condolences to Stanley Lowe’s family, friends and colleagues, current and former. My wife Sharon and I have fond memories of Stanley and remember him with affection. When I refer to him as Stanley, I intend no disrespect, but as a measure of the man and the endearing relationships he would form over the years with many people in and out of politics.. I always thought he would make an excellent Speaker and I was so pleased when his parliamentary colleagues in the Progressive Labour Party graciously agreed that I could second his nomination as an indication of the support he enjoyed in the whole House after the historic 1998 election, and help ‘drag’ him to the Chair in that time-honoured tradition. Stanley proved all of us right. As the Premier quite rightly stated, he was firm but fair. As Speaker, he gave as much latitude to a member as he thought appropriate and I was always appreciative of the time he gave me. Not that I was special. What he did for one, he would do for all. That said, he knew when enough was enough and while I never saw him lose his temper ( he came close a couple of times) you knew when it was time to sit down and/or retire from the Chamber. He was not perfect, but no one is. The same was true for those of us who served under him, I have already recalled on a number of occasions one of his favourite quotations: to err is human; to forgive divine.( Alexander Pope). That was my experience over the years with Mr. Speaker Stanley Lowe. I can also say that it was also my experience that he never carried a grudge. A new day brought a new opportunity to continue friendships. That was the beauty of the man and, if I might say, on that score, we could all take a leaf out of Stanley’s book. May he Rest In Peace, and his memory live on with the respect he so rightly earned and deserved.
