Simon David Cousins

Just heard about Simon’s death from another cousin Richard Sharp of Bradford. My Dad Derek Nichol was George Cousins’s nephew. I got in touch with Simon a few years ago via another cousin Jennifer who lives near San Francisco. So sorry to hear the news.

I have just heard this most awful news. I am so so sad. Simon was such a lovely man who I first met in 1971 when we we joined the cadets. In 1998 I went to work for him in a special unit within the protection side of policing. I will be forever grateful for him getting me that job. He was a pleasure to work for. I remember the BBQs he and Debbie laid on at their home for the guys. A very personable and generous man. Simon you will be truly missed. Debbie our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. I have known Simon and his brothers for fifty eight years, since we were all little ones going to school. Simon knew from a very early age exactly what he wanted to be when he grew up, he announced that he would be a Police Officer. Clearly he achieved this, and many other great things. He entertained us with many stories and memories, I would always want him on my table please.

I remember my first day in 2004 at the then fledging IPCC as a rookie investigator. Simon took me under his wing, and throughout my time there he was always available as a mentor and friend, or when a good story needed telling! My deepest condolences to Debbie, Sarah and Peter at this very sad time. He was so proud of you all.

I remember so many of our chats together and your brilliant stories when we were all on the Belch. Often we would be sitting on a boat, or just sitting chatting, listening in fascination of when you were in the Royal Protection, or as a Sergeant in the East End where it was obvious you were so happy to have met Debbie, when she was a nurse. You will not be forgotten mate! Very sad to hear that Simon had passed. My thoughts are both with him and you as his family. Simon was one of my Sergeants at Leman Street in the late 70's, early 80's and as such was one who helped me very early in my career. I was also an ex Cadet so we had shared something in common. Whilst I only knew him a relatively short time, it is clear his life meant a lot to many people. Rest in peace Simon....

I joined the IPCC in 2004 as a rookie investigator and worked with Simon as my manager, educator, advisor and friend until 2011. He advised and helped me through some very challenging situations and developed me to progress my career, I appreciated and never doubted his support. My memories of Simon are very fond. He was very entertaining with his stories of his experiences of life in the police and royal protection. He really loved life, he appreciated the finer things and was very generous in sharing his passions with those around him. I was fortunate to share meals a sailing voyage and trips to the cricket with Simon and to be invited to his home for the team barbecue where I had the pleasure to meet Debbie, Sarah and Peter. Simon was dedicated to his work but his face really lit up when he spoke about his family and he was very proud of Sarah and Peter and all that they achieved and his love and appreciation for Debbie were very clear. Simon was such a big character and I’m grateful to have had him in my life. My sincere condolences to Debbie, Sarah, Peter and all the family. Simon will be greatly missed.

Dear Debbi, Sarah & Peter Please accept my Deepest Sympathy on your untimely loss of dear Simon. I was privileged to enjoy Simon’s company with a group of mutual friends who all served with the Metropolitan Police Service. We watched cricket and socialised together, the final occasion being the Ashes Test Match at Lord’s last summer. The best occasion for me was the ICC Cricket World Cup in the Caribbean in 2007. We spent two weeks in Barbados with a day trip to St Lucia. Simon was a great raconteur bringing good humour and bonhomie to every occasion. I hope all your wonderful memories of Simon will continue to inspire you and bring you comfort. Simon had a beautiful mind and he lived a wonderful life. I will miss him a lot.
