Shruti Giri

Shruti was one of our GUF100 prize winners in 2021. This means that she was chosen to be the best student of the Faculty of Science and Engineering that year. She held her pitch for us online during the contest, because of her stay in the hospital at that time. In addition to giving a brilliant pitch, she had great study results, and was very active in promoting STEM sciences also for women. We express our deepest sympathy to her and her family and admire the beautiful things she has achieved in her much to short life. It is very sad that she passed away, but we will remember her as a wonderful enthusiastic person whose life was a gift to us all. Lou de Leij, on behalf of the Groningen University Fund (GUF)

My deepest condolences to Shruti's family, Maurice, and friends. I first got to know Shruti through the Sounding Board initiative, and later on as a colleague through mentoring. She was relentlessly enthusiastic, always full of energy, and always willing to help. She was, and will continue to be, an inspiration to me and to everyone else who knew her.

It is with great sadness that we have learned of the passing of Shruti Giri. Shruti joined the Honours College from the Faculty of Science and Engineering. Some of the Honours activities that she participated in were the broadening module and Summer School called ‘China Rising: Domestic Context, International Significance’. Shruti was one of the five Honours students who won the GUF-100 prize in 2021, a prize annually awarded to the best student of each faculty. She graduated from the Bachelor’s Honours programme in 2021, and graduated from her regular Bachelor degree programme with a cum Laude this summer. “She was an enthusiastic and cheerful student who was involved in numerous academic and non-academic activities'', says Han van der Strate, her faculty coordinator. Shruti will be greatly missed. The Honours College and its Honours community wish to express to family, friends and former classmates of Shruti our heartfelt sympathy, and wish them strength in coping with this loss. My deepest condolences to Shruti's family, her partner and her friends with such a devastating loss. I remember her as always very good prepared students and later a very good and dedicated teaching assistants for a number of my laboratory courses. She was always excited about physics and about helping students. As a person, she was always very positive and pleasant to talk to. She often came by my office just to say "hi" and have a chat about many things. She is gone way too soon. I will miss her so much.

Shruti and I were colleagues and friends. Although we weren't close, I'd like to think that we connected on some levels. She was very warm and satirical about her condition as well as the way the world works. I will always remember her perseverance and determination to continue learning and being passionate about physics. She radiated her knowledge to so many other students. She has been, and will be, an inspiration to all who knew her. May she rest in peace. All my love and support to her family and friends.

Dear Shruti, Although we may not have worked very often together, your image as a warm, kind and energetic young lady has always sticked with me. It was a great pleasure to have the chance to learn to know you. I wish you a peaceful journey home. Dian

Shruti always brought an atmosphere of cheerfulness, energy and curiosity into our classrooms. My condolences to all who knew her. I believe we've all leant something valuable from her.

Last year, Shruti worked as TA with me on Subatomic Physics, and I was very impressed by her positivity, dedication, and friendliness throughout; I think all our students, Nithesh, and me appreciated her very much. My deepest condolences to the Shruti's family, partner and friends for this loss; I wish them a lot of strength and kindness during this difficult time.
