Sandy Wade

A person I never forgot after leaving Ethiopia. Good colleague who thought me a lot. Lost contact overtime as it can happen, and by accident looked for his name on the internet learning about his passing away. Our sincere condoleances to Lyndsay & all family.

Dear Lyndsay, Celandine, Lily and Molly, I'm so sorry that Sandy has passed, and passed before his time. I hope that the pain of his passing is soon replaced by the fondest and happiest of memories. I am thinking of you all. D

I am very sorry to hear this news about Sandy. I remember him well from being neighbours in Shrivenham in the '70s and since. Sandy had a very distinguished career in the army and beyond, and is greatly missed.

I have only just heard of this very sad news. Sandy and I knew each other as cadets in 11 platoon at Sandhurst in 1977. Our paths rarely crossed since but I have clear memories of him as a dignified officer with a quiet nature and a steely inner strength. I will remember Sandy with tremendous admiration and much affection. I send my sincere condolences to Lyndsay and his family.

As so many others have said, Sandy was such a kind and wise soul - a true gentleman and friend. I will never forget his ability to bring calm to crisis and a smile to my face. Sending so much love to all of Sandy’s family.

I came to know Sandy through the Eastern African Association. He was a great supporter over many years. He gave me much useful advice particularly, of course but not only, on Ethiopia. He was excellent company, which much enhanced conversations with him during which I always learnt a great deal and benefitted from his knowledge and experience. There are so many who’ll miss him and my thoughts are with his family.

I was so deeply sorry and shocked when I heard this news last year. We saw a lot of each other over my four years as British Ambassador in Addis Ababa, after he had left the Embassy and was working with the EU Mission, and met from time to time in London afterwards. He became highly knowledgeable about Ethiopia and was always intelligent and good-humoured company. As this memorial page shows, he is much missed by many people. Alison joins me in sending our deepest condolences to Lyndsay and their family.

Such an honour to have spent time with Sandy. A true gent who gave so much, will never be forgotten .
