Sandra Doolan

Sandra always found something to laugh about when ever we met for coffee, when I visited her at home or saw at community events. Under the laughter was a genuine concern for others. I remember Sandra and the family in a special way today as they remember her on her Birthday. I trust Sandra is enjoying the rest she deserves in the arms of her god

Sandra always seemed such a positive person, and I like many others, always appreciated her delightful laugh. I got to know Sandra quite well when we organised St Peter's House parties or Retreats over a period of three years. It was wonderful to work with her and to enjoy her company during those enjoyable and fulfilling times! Of course, Sandra also worked with Alan to put on some wonderful Neighbourhood Fellowship events over the years which were always much appreciated. As a Christian, I feel assured that Sandra is now in Paradise with God.

We have known Sandra for quite a long time - probably since 1982 when we returned to Canberra (from living in West Germany and Sydney) and started attending Lyons Church of Christ. We have been blessed to have shared time with Sandra over those years. Sandra had a warm personality, a ready smile, and was always one of the first to lend a hand when anything had to be set up or put away. She was also keen to take part in new experiences and adventures - we enjoyed her company on relatively-recent tours to South Africa and to Japan. We know that she will be very much missed by Alan, their children, and their children's families, as she will be missed by us.

Although I dont have a photo to share, I was fortunate to have a conversation with Sandra at the last cousin's reunion. She was very caring and left a footprint on my heart. She will be fondly remembered.

Auntie Sandra was my godmother. She was the kindest and most gentle person I've ever known. Her laughter was contagious and I will never forget that sound of laughter over the top of everyone else's at family get-togethers. I remember so long ago spending Christmas in Canberra as a child and Auntie Sandra showing me flowers in the garden, and another occasion at lake wallagoot taking walks looking for echidnas with her and pointing out the local wildlife. I even have the slight memory of her helping me get prickles out of my little hand! I am devastated I didn't get to say goodbye. I hope she knows how easy she made people feel and how effortlessly she made me smile and laugh and feel warm inside my heart. I love you lots Uncle Alan and Auntie Sandra. May she rest in peace.

Sadly, circumstances prevented us from attending the services today, but we were fortunate to watch it from afar. Spread between Camp Hill (Brisbane) and Toorak (Melbourne), Briony and I later shared a virtual lunch (also via video) with our daughters Meagan, Ellen, and Judith to reflect on the memorial, and share many happy memories of Sandra. I can attest to the comments made by Matt, regarding 'balanced meals' and the special place that brussels sprouts now occupy in my vegetable choices. I remember fondly, though perhaps not at the time, that Sandra 'coerced' me into giving them a try, when as a young teenager I holidayed in Adelaide with she and Alan. I know it sounds corny (coming from the only vegetarian on our side of the family), but I always think of Sandra when brussels sprouts are on the menu. As one of my 'big sisters' (in-law), I know we will all miss her dearly.

Wishing we could have been there with you to celebrate the life of such an extraordinary person as Sandra. We are so thankful to have been a part of such a wonderful, warm and kind person's life and send our love to you all.
