Roland served with the Lutheran World Federation from September 2009 to January 2020, where he made an outstanding and lasting contribution to humanitarian work across Africa, the Middle East and Asia. As Regional Program Coordinator and later Global Humanitarian Coordinator, he played a key role in strengthening emergency response and in starting and sustaining operations in some of the world’s most challenging contexts

From Cornelia Kaestner: Roland was a wonderful, kind and funny person, one of the first to welcome me into World Service and to explain the ins and outs of programs in Nepal, Jordan, Iraq and many more. He was always open to chat and discuss ideas. Roland also had a sweet tooth, and I remember him coming to the coffee corner in the morning and his eyes lighting up when there was a cake or sweets to share. You could literally see the sun rise on Roland's face! Few have ever appreciated my German Christmas cookies like you did, Roland! ;-) I am shocked and saddened to hear about your illness and passing. Rest in peace - I will not forget you.

Roland’s passing is a profound loss of a man who had so much to give. He was a very dear friend for more than two decades, with a cheeky sense of humour and an infectious smile. Beneath his unassuming nature was a man of great courage, nerves of steel, deep compassion, and a remarkable ability to inspire positive change.
