Australian jazz, blues, r&b & soul icon Renée Geyer, the singer with an active six-decade career - best known for songs such as ‘It’s A Man’s Man’s World’, ‘Say I Love You’ and ‘Heading in the right direction’ - passed away peacefully among family and friends on January 17 after complications following hip surgery at age 69. In a tribute on Twitter, Australian singer and TV personality Marcia Hines described Geyer as “A game changer. A soul diva. My sister in song. We have just lost a person who possessed one of the greatest voices I have ever heard.” The American blues singer guitarist Bonnie Raitt, who worked with Geyer in the US said ‘Australia’s incomparable Renee Geyer was one of the greatest singers I’ve ever known” Colin Hay (formerly of Men At Work) said Renée holds a unique place in Australian musical history. “What a woman, what a singer! If beauty has a sound it is the voice of Renee. The US had Aretha, the UK Dusty Springfield. We had Renée! he said.

I have been a massive fan of Renee's since the mid-90s when I was in my late teens. I had 5 CDs packed for an extened backpacking trip around the world to play in my discman and Renee's was one of them. Her music saw me through nights in noisy hostels, overnight Greyhound trips through America and extended train trips across Europe. One of my favourite memories was meeting her at her book launch and signing at Readings in Carlton. Her live performances were amazing and I feel extremely fortunate to have been able to see her live many times. Her music helped me create so many amazing memories, but am so thankful that her beautiful voice will continue to be shared through her music.

An amazng talent, a woman who walked her own path, and was the first to laugh when she occasionally tripped up. We are lucky to have so many records of your singing and performances. It won't ever be the same as the thrill of hearing you sing live, but it will bring back so many great memories.

I have been a huge fan of Renee from my early 20's when I began my own singing career. She was an inspiration to all women in the Australian Music Industry and had an unmistakable voice and style. She was fierce and head strong but an amazing talent. I am so grateful my 10 year old daughter got to meet her just months before she passed. Renee was engaging and so friendly and kept referencing my daughter throughout the show. She even gave her the set list, scrawled on the back of a window faced envelope. We will cherish it forever along with memories of this amazing woman. R.I.P Renee the Queen of Australian soul
