Professor Michael Rand

Michael was Professor of Hebrew and Aramaic at the University of Cambridge. He joined the Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies in 2013, and was a world-leading scholar in the field of Medieval Hebrew Literature. He was working on rhymed-prose narrative (maqama) composed within the cultural and linguistic framework of the Arabic-speaking Mediterranean. He was also working on Jewish liturgical poetry (piyyut)—mostly in Hebrew, but some also in Aramaic—whose original home is Byzantine-period Palestine. Michael was a hugely respected scholar, and a much-valued colleague and friend to many.

My sincere condolences to Michael's lovely family, Hagar and much loved children; sending strength and love to all that knew him and were touched by his sunny smile, infectious giggle and genuine kindness and support. I remember Michael when he first visited FAMES for interview, he was himself then as always, curious, sincere, independent of thought and thoroughly engaging. His love for his family, his wife and children so clear, we would often compare notes on our children growing up and his delight in their successes was steadfast and true. My condolences to Michael's family and all members of FAMES faculty, staff and students. Michael was a wonderful colleague during the four years I got to know him. I still vividly remember all his questions about Ibn Khaldun and the almost weekly discussions on Arabic prose and literature.

Michael's passing fills me with great sadness. He was a great colleague, full of energy, enthusiasm and a love of arcane Arabic and Hebrew vocabulary. We often passed each other on our bikes, sometimes with children in tow, and Michael always had a smile and a wave at the ready. My thoughts are with his family at this very sad time.
