Phil Dunbabin

RIP Phil, will be forever grateful for your contribution to the drone community and for being an absolute gentleman. May you have peace and rest now. My deepest condolences to Phils family and close friends, I'm sure his loss will be very great, I hope that the outpouring of appreciation and love from all the people who valued his contribution will bring you some comfort.

We never met, but your work inspired me. Fly free.

I got to meet Phil and Chris early in 2017 when the “Melbourne Drone Flyers” community was young. On that warm summer evening in Sandringham I was encouraged to take flight having only ever flown at a local park. The briefing was quick and I was in the air in no time. Feeling I was punching above my weight (I started with the P3S - and still own it) with the Inspire, Phantom Pro and Mavic also being flown - but it was never a competition on what you have. I posted my video and Phil was quick to reply if I ever got a P4pro he’d be in trouble. I caught up with the boys as often as I could and Phil always gave advice to new flyers freely. I saw the group grow from 60 member and was promised admin/moderator access when the group reached over 600. MDF has well in excess of 3000 members and other Drone Flyers groups Australia wide! His unique view on membership was opening and inviting for all and it was always a highlight to catch-up after the batteries were drained and the night air started to cool. Our inaugural Great Southern Drone Day was a success bringing so many people together to talk drones and fly a true testament to Phil for getting things done and people together. 2 drone days down and various other meet ups were always well attended. I was invited by Phil to help with a special project with a camera retailer and thrilled to be involved in such a project. Phil made all welcome. Phil’s chair gained its own celebrity status (only Neanderthal’s stand when flying) and was a regular visitor to the many meets ups I was lucky to attend. Come the weekend Phil would Post the weekend weather screen grab - I miss that. Thanks Phil for bringing us together mate. Miss our chats
