Neil Barry

Neil was a quiet, reserved man, no fuss, wanted things simple. Neil loved his family, his children, grandchildren, a good chat and sports, with Rugby League and horse racing notable favourites. Neil’s early years were spent on the Northern Beaches of Sydney, with his beloved mother, Alma and father, Robert, and his loving siblings, Helen, Graham and John. His family have always surrounded Neil with much love and support in all seasons of his life. Neil's proudest accomplishments were his children, Belinda, Luke, Nathan and Joshua. While he did not teach his children the skills of pitching a tent or passing a football, he did teach them things like the art of chess and card games, and through his life, has left his children with many life lessons, which they take into adulthood - treasuring the simple things in life, showing kindness and keeping loved ones close. Neil supported his beloved children in their every endeavour and was so proud of all they had achieved. Neil cherished his grandchildren, always keen to hear of their latest achievements, and always gave them a cheeky $5 note for an ice cream or lollies. Neil will be remembered for his love of family, his eclectic choices in music, movies and television, his love of sports and above all, his kindness. May Neil now rest in peace.

I knew Neil for many years, originally meeting him when I coached Luke at soccer when he was 7. With common interests in football and racing I got to know him as an always friendly, humorous, intelligent and interesting fella. Neil could always make you laugh when he ridiculed and giggled at the efforts of other people’s footy teams. Of course it wasn’t so funny when he made fun of my beloved St George! I never thought it fair as his team, the North Sydney Bears, were no longer in the comp and we had no right of reply! Neil seemed to always be smiling and always upbeat, even in those times when he had his own concerns. He showed an interest in you as a person where some others would be focused on themselves. I don’t know of anyone I introduced to Neil who didn’t take an instant liking to him. The ‘card weekends’ away at my caravan in Swansea were always made enjoyable for myself, Glenn and numerous others by Neil’s participation. I moved to the Central Coast and we had minimal contact in recent years but I know that Neil would be one person you would never feel awkward with no matter how many years since last seeing him. It was an absolute pleasure to have known Neil Barry. My friends and I were all the better for having known and spent time with him. My fondest memories of Uncle Neil were as a kid when all the family would gather for Christmas Day. Uncle Neil was always happy to have a chat and find out what we were all doing at school or work. I can picture him happy with his Mum by his side again. Rest in peace Uncle Neil.

Neil was one of my first mates when I arrived in Australia 55plus years ago. I got to know Neil well and we did many things in a group from Royal Randwick to Nowra picnic races and he taught me the finer points of winning horses. Many a night was spent at the Grand Hotel “discussing” Rugby League issues- must say Neil had very fixed views! And never mention Rugby Union! In more recent times when I met Neil at lunches, he always mentioned his children whom he obviously loved so dearly. Farewell Neil I shall miss your friendly and humorous company.
