Michael McLaughlin

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our devoted father and grandfather, Michael J. McLaughlin, who left us unexpectedly on September 3, 2024, at his home in Vancouver, BC. Predeceased by parents Leo and Margaret (nee Magee) McLaughlin, he is lovingly remembered by Wendy (nee Gass); their children, Ryan (Samantha), Ian (Corinne) and Joanie (George); and dear sister, Jane (Donald Shaw). Adored as "Grumps" by grandchildren, Leo, Winifred, Albert, Ella, Thomas, Wesley, Ruby, Hugo and Penelope, whom he spoiled with thoughtful gifts and an abundance of hot chocolate whenever possible. He treasured his family and was excited to find his 'bonus' biological family later in life - especially sister Ali, brother Russel, and their families with whom he recently shared special moments. Born and raised in Toronto, he grew up with a love of sport which carried through his entire life. Playing hockey and football in his youth, high school and university days he developed a passion for the Argonauts and Leafs that meant he never missed an opportunity to change the channel to TSN or Hockey Night in Canada. He later completed a triathlon, paddled vigorously at cottage regattas, and whilst he was occasionally a wonderful golfer, he was always a great skier. He worshiped the fairways at Muskoka Lakes Golf and Country Club, Lambton Golf Club and the slopes at Caledon Ski Club with fervour. Michael attended St. Michael's College before studying at The University of Toronto where he was a proud member of Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity. He followed his father's footsteps into the insurance business with a long and successful career at Marsh and then Aon, for his final years before retirement. He acted as a caring and trusted mentor to many, offering professional and personal advice to anyone who asked, and every so often to those who didn't. His appreciation of the outdoors that began at Camp Ahmek, where he spent childhood summers canoe-tripping throughout Algonquin Park, continued on countless weekends in Muskoka and Caledon, traveling and sightseeing at destinations near and far, and finally walking the sea wall and enjoying the beautiful sea views from his Vancouver apartment. A dedicated philanthropist, he generously pledged his time and resources to many causes close to his heart throughout his career and retirement. Not immune to personal struggle, Dad never lost the twinkle in his eye or missed an opportunity to tell us all how proud he was, and how much he loved us. He would remind everyone to never give up on those you love or regret a chance to reach out to check in. His silly sense of humour shone through every challenge, and even as the butt of many family jokes and teasing, he always responded with "You'll miss me when I'm gone!". If only he knew how much. Rest in peace, Daddio. As per Michael's wishes, a private family service will be held, but please join us in celebrating his life on Saturday, October 5th from 1- 4 p.m., at the Toronto Cricket Club, 141 Wilson Ave. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to your local mental health and wellness organizations in his honour.
