Meganne George

Meganne George was an award-winning theatrical designer living and working in New York City. Her work has been seen across the country and around the world. She held a dual MFA in Costume and Scenic Design from Ohio State University and a BFA in Directing from Baylor University. An educator as well as an artist, Meganne was of Native American ancestry (Chocktaw Nation of Oklahoma) with roots in Texas and Arizona. She was the Resident Production Designer for 19 seasons with New Perspectives Theatre Company, serving as de facto co-producer on many NPTC productions and events and lending her critical eye and excellent dramaturgical skills in support of dozens of playwrights and directors. She was a partner to Artistic Director Melody Brooks in selecting the annual and long-term production schedule and securing resources for the company. Many of Meganne’s most daring projects in her last years were designs for avant-garde director Lee Breuer and Mabou Mines. Her first project with Breuer, Mabou Mines' Dollhouse, caught fire with its New York premiere in 2004. Dollhouse was an immediate critical success, receiving two Obie Awards and an Elliot Norton Award Design nomination for Meganne's costumes. Meganne toured the world with the production through 2010. Further Mabou Mines collaborations include Medea; Glass Guignol; Finn (NYSCA grant for costume design); Red Beads, which Breuer co-directed with acclaimed puppeteer Basil Twist; Pataphysics Penyeach starring Ruth Maleczech; and Choephorae, an original production that debuted at the 2006 European Capital of Culture Festival in Patras, Greece. Balancing Meganne’s works in avant-garde theatre over the past several years were her designs for classical opera (16 seasons with Bronx Opera) and dance in the New York City area. She also worked with a wide variety of creative theatre companies, including Adobe Theatre Company, Chain Lightning, AndHow, and the last seven seasons with Parity Productions. With these companies and many others, Meganne collaborated on some of the most exciting, challenging, and entertaining productions presented to New York audiences over the past twenty five years. A memorial service will be planned in New York City in the coming weeks, and a fund set up in Meganne's memory to support the small theatre companies and emerging artists that she dedicated her life to helping.

Whilst I never worked with Meganne myself, I know how very well loved she was by our theatre community, and what a great support she was to many of my friends. She is and will be sorely missed. I am tremendously shocked and saddened to hear this news. My deepest condolences to Meganne's family. Meganne designed the set for the workshop production of my play MOTHER OF GOD!. She gave my words life in images that I didn't even know was there. It was only this last winter that she drove up to my house to pick up a bunch of items we were donating for the New Perspective's Holiday Party auction--I think her Dad came along? She was clearly the sort of person who would do whatever she could to pitch in and help.

I feel so grateful to have worked with Meganne on a couple of shows in NYC and Buffalo for which she pulled from her own family’s closet for the perfect, authentic 1970s look. We met about 7 years ago through Melody and Ludovica and I was fortunate to be costumed by Meganne in several shows here in New York. Her ability to find exactly what an actor needs and wants for a part was uncanny. She always made sure I was comfortable and happy with her choices. I loved getting to know Meganne over the past few years and found her to be a very intelligent and fun person. I am heartbroken that she is gone so quickly. My thoughts are with you during this very difficult time. May she rest peacefully....
