As some of you may know, Martin was given the devastating news on 19th of February 2020 that he had an aggressive brain tumour. Martin touched the hearts of so many people and is loved by so many, including colleagues across a number of services. Martin went above and beyond with the work that he did with our Young People. He was respected by so many and he would often be greeted in the streets of Huddersfield by his young people who thanked him for all he had done for them. His career spanned 30 years as a Social Worker, Senior Practitioner and a Team Manager in Kirklees across a number of service areas. A significant number of these years were spent in the Children in Care and Care Leavers service. In July 2019 Martin was successful in securing his dream job as a Practice and Development Consultant. Martin loved his role as it gave him the opportunity to be able to mentor newly qualified Social Workers starting their careers, a significant role in relation to their professional development. Martin was also one of the first Social Workers in Kirklees to set up supported housing for a woman he was working with who he knew would not thrive in the traditional care settings available to her at the time. I’m sure you all have some memory of Martin that will make you smile at this sad time and we ask you to share some memories of him here.

Martin Hunt. What more can be said about this amazing man. . Only just discovered this page. Martin left us 2 months ago. It was a big shock. I still can’t quite believe I won’t ever see him again in this world. Such a warm down to earth colleague and friend. He had the kindest eyes and the biggest smile. He had a wicked sense of humour and I could literally talk to him about anything!. We shared laughs, tears and hugs. He helped me a lot when I was down. My heart goes out to Gary, and the whole family and his friends. I will never forget Martin. I feel he will never be far away. He’s even got me listening to Morrissey again! I know what he’d to my criticise of Moz. ‘Now then Mary don’t throw the baby out with the bath water’ And you know what he’s right!

Martin was a fantastic work colleague, always happy and smiling. He was very passionate about his work and brought a happy energy to work. Such a shock to hear the news that he was unwell and then passed away so quickly. Treasure life it is so precious and can be taken away in a heart beat. ♥️

So sorry to hear you've left us!!. Martin was in my team when started new with Kirklees in the LAC team 2014. Martin supported my induction and was very kind, accepting and funny person to work with. He also had a smile on his face, never a dull moment and willing to listen and support his team. He went above and beyond for young people. You will be missed as a colleague and love one. My condolence to your family. RIP in the bossom of the Lord!

I met Martin at work in 2014 and we bonded over our love of music (in fact, we hardly ever talked about work!). I enjoyed our endless discussions about all things music, and going to see live bands. Martin was a true gent of sound politics and mind - he had quick wit and a good sense of humour and would always wear a big smile. I hope to share some greased tea with Martin again in the future when all's well. XX

Martin!! Such a loving, caring and passionate man. I can not believe that you are no longer here to share what you had to give with us all. My very first memory of Martin is at Riverbank in the kitchen. I had no idea who you were and you were asking everyone if your pink jumper was 'too pink'. You made me laugh with your comments, attitude and smile. I later witnessed the strength of your commitment to the children you worked with when working with you to find placements. So sorry to hear this news. I worked with Martin for a good few years, through the crazy times at Riverbank. He always had a smile on his face, never got embroiled in the drama and was a true Social Worker, advocating for the kids even if his opinion was unpopular. Stand out memories - his early morning yoga, his adorable relationship with his mam and the powerful training he devised and delivered on UASC.
