It is with extreme sadness that we announce the heart-breaking news of the untimely passing of our colleague, but also our dear friend, Marius Meyer. He was a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Industrial Psychology, Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences, University of Stellenbosch, where he was the Programme Leader for Human Resource Management programmes, including the newly launched Postgraduate Diploma in Strategic Human Resource Management that was developed based on his vision to position HR as strategic business partner. Marius was a remarkable, passionate, kind and extremely humorous soul who could lighten up any conversation with his contagious laugh. He was a caring individual, which naturally emerged in the way he invested himself in his classes and engagements with students. He impacted the lives of many students, colleagues, and friends through his passion for people as well as his inspiration, and commitment to advance and grow the profession of Human Resource Management (HRM) globally. He left a remarkable legacy as HRM thought leader and will forever be remembered and recognised for his leadership and commitment to the development of South Africa's first national HR governance framework, which includes the first national set of human capital metrics for companies. He has been a human resource development practitioner, consultant, academic, board member and manager for the past 24 years. As the former chief executive of the professional body for HR practitioners, the SA Board for People Practices (SABPP), he was responsible for the quality assurance of 82 learning providers, as well as the HR accreditation of all universities in South Africa. For the last two years he was the Chairperson of the SABPP. His passion for leadership, strategy, governance, organisation development, change management and people development is evident in the numerous books and articles that he published as well as the consulting interventions for more than 200 companies. He was a sought-after speaker at national and international conferences and left a mark on the world that cannot be erased. Marius received an honorary doctoral degree from the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) in 2018 and a life-time achievement award from the SABPP for his contribution and meritorious service to the profession. As colleagues, we wish to celebrate his life as a tribute to his powerful legacy of recognising people as central to business success and making a strategic contribution to people management in South Africa. He was an esteemed colleague, but even more a loving, caring, and passionate friend. We’ve lost a gentle giant and phenomenal academic and practitioner who will be immensely missed. We are deeply saddened by the loss of our colleague and during this difficult time of mourning, we offer our heartfelt condolences to his wife, Hanlie and his daughter, Nadia, to his parents, family, colleagues and to everyone who engaged with Marius. He touched each and every one of our lives and he will be deeply missed and never forgotten. May you have strength and take comfort in the memories that you have as we bid farewell to a valuable member of our team. May Marius forever rest in peace. Almost a month has passed since Marius untimely passing. I find myself frequently reflecting on his legacy which is one of abundance. His contribution to the HR community in South Africa and globally is well documented and recognised. Above all was Marius the gentleman, the consummate professional, the human legend. A family man. A giant with stature, abundant kindness, immense vision, natural warm and always with an engaging smile. Deepest sympathy to his family friends and colleagues. Marius THANK YOU. Mr Meyer was the most impactful and inspirational lecturer I have had the privilege of being taught by. He went above and beyond for each and every single student and was truly invested in our education. He will be so greatly missed by all who had the blessing of being taught by him. I met Marius in 1999 at TSA, he was my lecturer for HRD at Technikon South Africa. I was a poor teenager from Limpopo Province looking for a better life in Johannesburg. At the time Marius was recruiting a student admin assistant from his final year class of 1999. I applied for the job and was successful. I started working with Marius from 04 January 2000. Marius was like a big brother to me, he took me under his wing, he mentored me as if it was his personal mission in life. Marius groomed me to become one of the youngest Lectures at the time. He thought me skills that made me an independent person that I am today. I wouldn’t be who I am had it not been this angel from God. Marius sincerely believed in the development and uplifting the underprivileged. I am eternally grateful to have been a recipient of Dr Marius Meyer’s kindness and generous spirit. I too have lost a friend, brother and a mentor. I will forever be grateful for what you have done for me Dr Meyer. Rest in Power my friend.

Marius was a great colleague and friend. He lived with such infectious passion and vigor and inspired so many of us. His kindness, humility, generosity and great sense of humor will remain his trademarks. He left behind a impressive impact on the HRM fraternity. Rest in peace dear Marius.
