Kwang Kim

I met Kwan Sik when we were both young investigators at neighboring institutions. I was instantly impressed with his open and welcoming manner and the degree to which he shared his work and insights. I regret that I never had the chance to know him well but my admiration for his abilities and stellar career in infectious disease knows no bounds. I am very saddened to hear of his passing. ID has truly lost one of its great pioneers. His work has made such animpression on ID, medicine in children as well as careers developed, mysteries solved but most of all lives saved!!. My heart goes out to his family. The world is truly a smaller place today! Dear Mrs. Kim and family: I am truly saddened to hear of Dr. Kim's passing. I completed my Peds ID fellowship at CHLA in 1998, a couple of years before he left for Johns Hopkins. Dr. Kim was a soft-spoken and quiet man, but had immense knowlege and passion for his work. He also had a quick wit and a great sense of humor. I have admired his wisdom and patience, and will always be grateful for everything he taught me during training. He will be greatly missed. Sending my deepest condolences and prayers to your family.

Dear Mrs. Kim and family, My deepest and profound regrets on hearing about the passing of Dr. Kim who has made an indelible mark in my career with his teaching and his kindness. Please know that he will always be remembered fondly and will be missed by those who have been privileged to learn from him. Through all of us, he continues to impact the many patients we all treat. One of my fondest memories of Dr. Kim, was him relaying to me his phone conversation to my boss as one of my references. Dr. Kim said that he had a great conversation with my boss and asked me if I would be happy with this job. I said that yes, Dr. Kim I am happy and I will always remember his answering smile. I later learned from my boss that Dr. Kim said to him "Keep Swathi happy and she will be very loyal to you and your institution". He cared about all of his learners- their success, and more importantly their happiness in his own way. My thoughts, prayers and condolences are with you all in this tough time. Dear Mrs. Kim and family, I was very saddened to hear of Dr. Kim's passing. He had a substantial impact on me as a person and on my career as a physician scientist and division chief. Dr. Kim joined the division of infectious disease in 2000. I was then a third year fellow. He was my division chief for 17 years and memories will persist as my colleagues and I reflect on our careers and strong relationships. I have cherished and appreciated Dr. Kim’s view on scientific rigor, clinical conundrums and leadership style. He was data driven, passionate, fair and an introvert. I will always remember his personal strength exemplified by his presence, while saying only the most important words- one instance was when there was loss in my family and the other was when I departed for a new leadership position. Sending my deepest condolences to the Kim family. It was so sad to hear of Dr. Kim's passing. He was always excited to teach and mentor new trainees. He patiently worked through key concepts every time he was on clinical service and would remember nearly everything you told him despite writing down little to no information. Dear Mrs. Kim and Family, I am so sad about the passing of Dr. Kim. I have known Dr. Kim since my residency starting in 2004 when I was thinking of going into ID. Even though I ended up choosing a different specialty, Dr. Kim was always supportive and so kind in my interactions with him. He always stopped in the hall to get updates on how I was doing. I was so saddened to hear the news of Dr. Kim's passing. I completed my peds ID fellowship at Hopkins from 2005-2008. Dr. Kim was a man of few words but incredible intellect. I always appreciated his wisdom and directness, and his quiet nature set the tone for the program. He will be sorely missed. Sending my sincere condolences to his family at this painful time.

As the director of the pediatric residency education program at Johns Hopkins, on behalf of the pediatric residents and residency program leadership team, I wanted to send our sincere condolences on the passing of Dr. Kim. I know how much he meant to so many people and how devastating this must be for all. Dr. Kim started as a faculty member at Johns Hopkins in the same year I started here as a young, naive intern over 20 years ago, and I remember him so fondly from my own residency as a great teacher who was incredibly kind to residents and fellows. We will always recall what a great mentor he was and how much we all learned from him. He will be greatly missed by all of the residents and fellows.
