John Thomas “Jack” Shine, 86, passed away on September 25, 2025, in Benidorm, Spain. Born on June 18, 1939, in Brooklyn, New York, Jack lived a life marked by service, adventure, and an enduring love for the world around him. His early years in Brooklyn laid the foundation for a remarkable journey that would span continents and decades. Jack proudly served his country as a United States Marine. During his military tenure, he held the distinguished role of special envoy to President Dwight D. Eisenhower—a testament to his dedication and integrity. Following his military service, Jack embarked on a long and fulfilling career with the Long Island Rail Road. For 33 years, he worked as an engineer, contributing to one of the nation’s busiest commuter rail systems with steadfast commitment and professionalism. After retiring from the railroad, Jack turned his attention to exploring the world. His adventurous spirit led him to visit 25 countries and embark on more than 30 cruises with eight different cruise lines. Whether sailing across oceans or strolling through historic cities, Jack embraced each journey with enthusiasm and curiosity. For the past two decades, Jack made his home in Spain, where he found serenity along the Mediterranean coast. He cherished his daily walks by the sea in Albir—moments of quiet reflection that brought him great peace. A lifelong learner and devoted patron of the arts, Jack immersed himself in literature and culture. He found joy in visiting museums, attending concerts and ballets, and engaging deeply with the beauty of human expression. Jack’s zest for life was matched only by his warmth and generosity. Those who knew him were touched by his humor, kindness, and boundless curiosity. His days were filled with laughter and celebration—a reflection of a man who truly understood how to live fully. He is survived by his beloved wife, Veronica, and his treasured children: Matthew, Sharon Marino, Karen, David, and Catherine Perkins. He was preceded in death by his dear son, John.

I am so sorry for your loss. Words alone cannot ease your grief only time can help with that. I never got the opportunity to know Jack but from what I’ve read, he was a wonderful caring man who will be missed by those who knew him. I never had the privilege of meeting Jack in person, and that’s something I truly wish I had done. Our paths first crossed about ten years ago, when he booked his trips to Orlando with me. Over the years, we exchanged many emails, and from the very start, I was struck by his kindness and thoughtfulness. I still remember learning that his name was John but that he went by Jack—it immediately brought “JFK” to mind! That lighthearted association stayed with me, but what really stood out was the genuine care and warmth he showed in every interaction. Although we never met face to face, I feel lucky to have gotten to know Jack and, through social media, his wonderful family.
