Franz Trautmann

My condolences go out to the family. I am so sorry too hear of the lost of a dear loved one to this family. Dealing with this situation can be the hardest thing to face. God's word the bible gives heartfelt and true meaning for ones sleeping in death; Revelation 21: 3,4 says: 3  With that I heard a loud voice from the throne say: “Look! The tent of God is with mankind, and he will reside with them, and they will be his people. And God himself will be with them. 4  And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away.” God also promises a hope for ones to have life again at John 5: 28,29a : Do not be amazed at this, for the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice 29  and come out. It took me some time to finally write a message on this page as I did not want to want to say a final goodbye. There are still moments when I pick up my phone to send a text message or app to Franz, only to realise that it is not possible anymore. I first met Franz when I joined the Trimbos-institute back in 1998. We worked together in the International Affairs unit for almost eight years on various international projects in the field of illicit drugs in a range of countries. We continued working together after I had moved to the European Commission, among others on two important studies into the international and EU drug markets. Over the years we became friends. I admired his energy and his directness. During dinners in Brussels or Amsterdam he could tell about his latest projects and many, many journeys, praise the Concerto record store, talk about the last good restaurant in which he had eaten (we did not always agree on the rating) and we could talk at length about drug policy, politics and people in general. But most of all he talked with pride about his son Maarten, who he had seen growing up into a self-confident and intelligent young man. Like many people on this memorial page I miss Franz' presence and dry humor. His departure leaves a void in many lives. I wish all the best for Maarten and for Lidija, his partner. Maurice.

My wife and I met Franz in Utrecht. Although busy (as I believe was natural with Franz), he gave us his time generously. I will remember Franz as a warm and modest man, and I hope that his family are finding some peace of mind and consolation from so many testimonies paid here to their loved one.

Lieve Maarten, even heel erg stilgevallen bij het ons overrompelende bericht in het NRC, door een bezoeker bij toeval neergerlegd op onze Duitse tafel hier....In gedachten terug. In het uitgebreide schaduwenrijk van je vaders werk waren er volop lichte plekken waarin wij met jullie, Franz, je moeder Mies en jij, het leven vierden. Wildkampeersessies in de Ardennen, gepropt in een weekend, waarbij de tent altijd stond op loopafstand van een Belgisch eethuisje. En waarbij afgebroken takken, zoals Kleiinduimpje al deed, zorgvuldig werden neergelegd zodat de tent, na het gelag en in het pikkedonker, kon worden teruggevonden. Jij bent er ontstaan en een betere levensstart kan er niet zijn. Die Franz, die het leven vierde zoals bedoeld, is ons het meest dierbaar. Want de "Themen und Discussionen", als voorbijschuivende wolken aan het firmament, passeren ze almaar en opnieuw en ook zonder Franz. Hij glimlacht veelbetekenend naar ons op zijn wolkje daarboven. Mit Franz verbindet mich eine enge Zeit unserer gemeinsamen Arbeit für akzept e.V. Neben dem beruflichen Zusammensein, hatten wir immer Zeit für persönliche Dinge. Auch wenn in den letzten Jahren kein Kontakt bestand, macht mich sein Tod sehr traurig!

Franz has been a dear friend and colleague over many years via REITOX and EMCDDA. Monday last week, his chair in Lisbon was empty. It was incredibly sad. We will all miss his presence, his life blood, commitment, smile and fun approaches. My deepest condolences go to the family and friends and colleagues at Trimbos Institute.

Het lijkt me zo onwerkelijk dat ik geen kans meer zal krijgen om samen een kop heerlijke koffie te delen, Franz. Ik wens je familie, collega's en vrienden veel sterkte en hoop dat jij naar een volgende plek bent waar je iedereen kan inpalmen met je fantastische verhalen en lach. Ik ben dankbaar dat ik je naast de zetels van het EMCDDA ook in Brussel kon aantreffen. Jij, de overdosis kennis en ervaring. Ik, het groentje dat vol enthousiasme toch wel bij probeerde te benen. Ik kijk nog steeds naar je op als collega, maar zeker ook om je hartelijkheid, je warme persoonlijkheid en je joie de vivre.

In Catalonia, we feel greatly the loss of our colleague Franz. Aside from being a great expert, he was a wonderful person and he will be greatly missed. Our deepest condolences to his family. Rest in peace.
