Born on 12 May 1963, Dr Usen attended secondary school at St. Gregory’s College, Obalende in Lagos. From there, he studied fine art with a specialisation in sculpture at the prestigious Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. In 1988, he earned his Masters degree in fine art( sculpture) at the same institution and later gained a PhD at the University of Port Harcourt. A distinguished fellow of the SNA, Dr Uwa James Usen will be missed sorely by all those who loved him; students, colleagues and family alike. He will also be remembered painfully by the visual arts community in Nigeria.

We only connected recently and it was too brief. I remember our Ikoyi days and the fun we all had at your place. You followed your parents cue and welcomed us to your house. My siblings and I were always there, eating. Our parents used to have to beg us to come back home. As playful as you were, you didn't play with your studies. An inspiration always. You were talented and made Nigeria proud. You are so missed. Safe travel dear Uwa. No more pain where you are. Adieu.

Big Bros Useno, I am deeply shock of your demise when I called your line, but heard your daughter's voice who broke the sad news to me. I remain grateful having you as a colleague at ABU, Zaria, a wonderful friend whose advises encouraged me as a practicing artist, even last May to join you for an exhibition. You inspired Akwa Ibom artists to show case their talents in exhibitions in 2017 & 2019 sponsored by AKSG. You were really our anchor man.
