Derek Manchee

Derek was a well loved member of New Community Church. He was with us from day one of us forming, which was then Barnabas and has been part of many people's lives within our Church community. He was a professional photographer and during the 70's, 80's and some of the 90's he will have taken many members, past and present wedding photos. It would be a lovely idea that if people did want to send a message/memory that they could also attach a wedding photo if Derek took their pictures.

Our condolences to Derek’s family and just want to recall some of our memories of him. We first met Derek at June and Tony Storey’s house, he was always eager to chat about photography, trains and his belief in Jesus. I was about to be baptised the next day on Christmas Eve and I was anxious about being dunked as I have a fear of being under water, Derek spoke a few kind words which calmed me and the baptism went well as he said it would. A little later on at a house group meeting he had a prophecy for me - he said, “like an oyster that is closed shut, when it opened it would reveal a beautiful Pearl”. I‘d like to think that prophecy has come true. Derek’s work on earth is done and is now claiming his richly deserved reward in heaven. A real honour to have known you Derek. Chris and Lyn

Derek was a lovely man, always had something to say and share of his passion for Jesus. We learnt a lot from him. We had the privilege of being in a few prayer groups with Derek, he always brought such a richness and clarity to the word of God. He pioneered the Silver and Gold Group which is still functioning to this day. He was a warm and kind man with a wonderful sense of humour. A gentleman. Reg and Chris Briselden xx

We knew Derek mainly through the over 50's group of which he was a leader. His devotion to God was always evident and his care for people. We remember particularly a seaside outing with the group on a blustery , showery day. Myself, Irene, Derek and 2 others braved a walk along the cliff and he insisted on taking a group photograph. I'm sure we looked our best, cold and windswept but he made us all laugh. As the rain got worse we sheltered on the pier and chatted and laughed together, especially when Irene realised her seat was wet! Great memories!

I always found Derek a warm hearted individual, very welcoming when I walked through the church doors with a genuine concern for people. I remember he regularly served and helped out in the church, giving lifts to the infirm. An unsung hero. A treasure in so many ways.
