David Soloway

David M. Soloway, of Petaluma, passed away on Monday, August 17, 2015, at age 58 of an apparent heart attack. He is survived by his wife Linda (Qiyun) and daughter Zoe, as well as by his mother Beth, his siblings, Eddie, Mark, Lisa, and Dyan, and their spouses and significant others, many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and all of Linda’s family. Dave spent his life turning interests and incidents into accomplishments. His college thesis in the field of ecology led to his support of the Marin Agricultural Land Trust and work with his personal apiary in later life. He transformed some early bad luck with cars into a passion for collectible Volvos. And his love of poetry led him to the Institute of Reading Development where he worked for 34 years, serving as Vice President of Marketing and Chief Executive Officer. His efforts at the Institute were directly responsible for more than two million children and adults having the experiences with the written word that he, himself, so enjoyed. In all his pursuits Dave strove, to paraphrase a Frost poem that he once quoted during a business meeting, to unite his vocation and his avocation. Those who knew him saw this most of all in the joy he took from his family. Dave was a self-appointed family archivist, and loved his parents, siblings, nieces, and nephews very much. Beyond all others, Dave loved his wife, Linda, and his daughter, Zoe. His long-time friends and colleagues saw him happier in the last five years, with his new family, than ever before, and knew the great pride he took in touting his daughter’s every achievement and the joy he took in spending time with her. Dave taught us in the way he lived that “Only where love and need are one, / And the work is play for mortal stakes, / Is the deed ever really done / For Heaven and the future’s sakes.” - Robert Frost. We will miss him terribly, and we shall not forget him. A celebration of Dave’s life will be announced when it has been scheduled.
Condoleances

My condolences go out to the family. I am so sorry too hear of the lost of a dear loved one to this family. Dealing with this situation can be the hardest thing to face. God's word the bible gives heartfelt and true meaning for ones sleeping in death; Revelation 21: 3,4 says: 3 With that I heard a loud voice from the throne say: “Look! The tent of God is with mankind, and he will reside with them, and they will be his people. And God himself will be with them. 4 And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away.” God also promises a hope for ones to have life again at John 5: 28,29a : Do not be amazed at this, for the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice 29 and come out. I am sending heartfelt condolences to all those who have been touched by Dave's authentic goodness. I knew him from my years at IRD, and have nothing but respect for his ways of leading, and guiding. I am sure that he has made a giant contribution to so many through his vision, and his care. It has been many years since I saw him last, but his life touched me in a positive way. Sincerest compassion goes to his family and all friends, we have lost a good man.

We are filled with sadness to hear this news and our hearts go out to Dave's family and friends. We both knew Dave through IRD and had great respect and fondness for him. We are glad to know that Dave found the happiness of a wife and child and heartbroken that he has left them so soon. I (Lisa) remember the first time I met Dave in an interview in his office in Novato. His passion for his work and the heart and force he brought to working with others were utterly palpable. He was, to me, the perfect model of true leadership. He has left an indelible mark on many lives. We will miss him.

My profound condolences to Dave's family and to Paul Copperman. Dave was always friendly, had a smile for everyone and when his daughter was born I asked him how he felt. I will never forget that smile. He was clearly 'over the moon' and I know with regard to his love for her, he never set foot on earth again. I know there are no word of comfort, at this time, that will ease you pain and sadness. Please know that you are not alone and that I, for one, am happy to have known him and how blessed I am to have been able to work for him, even if only for a short time.

My deepest condolences to Dave's family and to the much, much larger IRD family for whom I know this is also an unspeakable loss. I worked for the Institute for almost 8 years (primarily in Chicago), as a teacher, a teacher supervisor and curriculum writer. My direct contact with Dave was minimal but, as others have said (and will continue to say), his influence on what we did every day was as palpable as Paul's. I'm so grateful to have been part of (and shaped by) the world and the work he helped create. And so sorry for his loss.

Oh how very sad. My heart goes out to his family. May they have the strength and memory of love to endure such a loss. He was one of the good guys. I spoke with Dave many times during the past few years of working at the Novato office. He was alway warm and friendly. I remember once asking him "How's Nigel?" (His little black poodle). He answered "Nigel's perfect." Which cracked me up. He will be missed.
