Chief Isaac Nnemenum Okonu

No words can express how sorry I am for the loss of your father. Your father was a phenomenal man, what good memories you must have, may you look back on those precious memories and find peace at this unimaginable time. Please accept my deepest condolences to you and your family.

Chief Isaac Nnemenum Okonu and I arrived the United Kingdom almost the same time. In that period, Ikwerre in the United Kingdom had one main organisation, the Ogbakor Ikwerre United Kingdom and Ireland (popularly known as Ogbakor for short). Every Ikwerre man and woman attended Ogbakor meeting or pay a heavy fine. There were no mobile phones, emails, WhatsApp or zoom. Everybody had to attend the meeting in person be it in Manchester, Liverpool, Sheffield, Newcastle, Birmingham or London and distance was no excuse. It was indeed a very pleasant time and we all travelled in convoy reminiscing our community Emohua. Farewell my brother and friend Isaac. Dr Charles I. Kejeh.

Late Isaac Okonu and l worked in the Banking and Finance department of the Rivers state Polytechnic now Ken Saro Wiwa Polytechnic Bori. Both of us were good friends. He used to call me Daddy. I handed over the headship of the department to Okonu when l contested the position of the Director or Dean, School of Management Science and won. I recommended Okonu to be made a Chief Lecturer a position he held till he retired. In 2014 Okonu recommended me for a conference in London which was approved by the then Rector. I made all necessary arrangement and traveled. My friend Okonu told me that his son was in London and that l should stay with him. He gave me all the necessary assistance for me to travel. As l arrived London l called his son Dr Henry Okonu who made all arrangements for me to get at his place. I had a pleasant stay with the family of Dr Henry in London. Dr Henry took me in the night to locate the venue of the conference for me to be able to locate the place the following day. Dr Henry used to take me in his car to visit his friends who were residing outside London. It was really a pleasant experience. I continue to be grateful to the family. I retired before Okonu and during the period we used to visit and call each other every week to recount the experiences of retirees. We were always discussing how our gratuity would be paid which up till the time of his demise he has not been paid. I was very shocked when in October last year l was told that my friend had passed on. May his gentle soul rest in perfect peace. Sir Dr Peter Dubon.

That bike wasn’t just about learning to ride; it was about the love and care he put into every part of our lives, always making sure we had what we needed to experience new things and move forward with confidence. Grandpa had a way of making everyone feel valued. He shared his wisdom not just in lessons but in the way he lived his life—with patience, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to family. His kindness was boundless, always putting others before himself and making sure we felt safe, loved, and supported. To us, he was more than a grandfather—he was a mentor, a protector, and a role model. His presence in our lives shaped who we are today, and his legacy will continue to live on in everything we do. Grandpa, thank you for everything—for the lessons, the love, and the memories that will stay with us forever. Dear Doctor Henry, I will count your father as one of the people who worked tirelessly and sincerely to make me who I am today. Your father, out of the appreciation of what my father did for him, assisted me in gaining admission in to Bori Polytechnic, as it was known back then. Your father not only opened his heart, but he also opened his door which I lived with him the first few months I was a student in Bori. Your father was a kind and caring man. I planned one day to see him again and say "thank you." His passing came as a shock to me. May the Lord receive him and grant him a peaceful and eternal rest. Amen.
