Bill Groves

Immensely sad news. Bill was my partner and mentor in the geology department for almost 10 years, ever patient and always offering encouragement to a novice teacher. His humour was legendary as were his self deprecation and generosity to teachers and students alike. I fondly remember geology field trips, guest appearances on his local cricket team, sharing endless attempts to master the game of golf and many other memorable moments on and off the sports field. It has been almost 40 years since I saw Bill but I have never forgotten. A true gentleman. RIP Sincere condolences, Carol.

My memories of Bill go back to our scouting days and many happy hiking and camping weekends, Bill was always a good member to have in your team. In our later teens it was the supporting of West Ham and YHA holidays that we enjoyed and got much pleasure from. Bill would always pack his geology hammer, his enthusiasm and interest in fossil hunting was unbelievable.I remember him saying once that it was not always the finding of a fossil but the realisation that you are the first human to see it, that`s what is so amazing. Very sorry to hear the sad news of Bill's passing. He was a kind and incredibly enthusiastic man, qualities that were obvious even in a short time in his company. Our thoughts are with you Carol, John and all those close to him.

Bill..... A glint in his eye, a mischievous smile, a dry sense of humour, a brilliant teacher, a supportive colleague and a wicked left arm spin bowler! I will forever have good memories of staff cricket matches on Thursday evenings, with his mystery spin bowling ... he should have played for Essex and England. What a truly lovely man who always had such a twinkle in his eye. He was a really supportive teacher and Senior member of staff. I have many happy fun memories of walking trips , golf and the occasional game of cricket. Our thoughts are very much with you Carol , John and family .

I was very sad to hear about Bill's passing. He was a model for us young geologists. Aberdeen has a disproportionate amount of Black Country geologists due to his inspirational teaching, ability to enthuse and infectious humour. He gave me a love for geoscience and a love for David Bowie too. Bill - a legend and a significant character in my life. He will be missed.
