Bill Chapman

Bill was a member of COR MAELGWN for 25+years. We were all so happy that Bill was able to sing with us at the St David's day concert on 28th, February, 2020. Bill was a true gentleman and would always give 100% to everything that he did. As choir members we would wear our black dinner suit and black socks at official concerts, but Bill would more often than not wear his favourite red socks. As stage manager I would ask Bill, what colour socks are you wearing tonight, he would just stand there and give a cheeky laugh. Bill travelled extensively with the Choir to various countries in Europe, he was such an asset for us because he was able to speak many different languages. Many of us remember Bill joining the Choir. From the very beginning Bill would get involved in fund raising for many charities. Every member of the Choir would describe Bill as a Gentleman, he would always do his best for everyone. Bill was the Chairman of the Choir a few years ago, and during his term of office, he always did his best for the Choir. We moved into the house beside Pat and Bill about 18 months ago, and we knew from the beginning that we got very (very!) lucky with our neighbours. Bill went out of his way to welcome us to the house. He often commented on how much he enjoyed hearing ours boys chattering and pottering in the garden. He always took the time to chat to the boys and play ‘peepo’ over the wall. To me, he is the kind of person that would restore your faith in humanity - always kind, pleasant, friendly. As many people have said, he was a true gentleman. We loved seeing him in the garden, we miss him a lot and are sorry that we won’t have the opportunity to get to know him better. I am so sorry to hear the news of Bill's death and would like to send my warm condolences to his family. I remember him from when our children were in school and through the Labour Party and am saddened at the passing of such a lovely man.

I saw Bill regularly at All Saints Church, where we both worshipped until recently. Always pleasant and friendly, a real gentleman and a passionate Socialist. When I attended Bible Study at his house, he would always make the drinks, even my odd one, which was chicory with goat’s milk. He always encouraged my husband Howard with his Esperanto studies, bringing round relevant magazines for him to read. We loved him and will miss him so much.

I was very fond of Bill, he was very kind to me and we had some fun times out canvassing and chairing meetings. He was such a gentleman and made a great contribution to civic life. His multi lingual (support for) Father Christmas was the stuff of legend. He’ll be greatly missed but will always be held in the thoughts of so many. Much love to Pat and all the family

Spoke to Bill quite often on Facebook .Always polite and courteous on political debate .I send my condolences to all his family and friends ,RIP Comrade where there is no pain and no time

I have known Bill since I first met Pat when our daughters Elinor and Hayley started at the Toddlers Group 32 years ago. He demonstrated his love of children showing patience and kindness when playing with them. He was always supportive and encouraging to our children Hayley and Sion. He was a wonderfully supportive and proud father to Lucy and Elinor encouraging them to achieve their goals. He was always interesting to talk to especially when talking about his travels to Patagonia the Cameroons and of course Japan.In recent years I have been involved with Bill as a member of the Labour party and was impressed with his commitment which encouraged me to become more involved. I am extremely sad by his passing and I am sure he will be hugely missed by his family and colleagues in the various organisations with which he was involved. My sincere condolences.

I worked with Bill at Heathfield High School in Leicestershire, very many years ago. My final memory is of Bill's kindness to me when I was in a rather emotional state about leaving the school. He insisted on taking me into his classroom while he was teaching a rather reluctant group of students. Whenever I've thought about the school over the years, the image that's come to mind has always been of Bill darting round that classroom, enthusiastically engaging those children. I never saw Bill again, but I am very saddened that such a lovely gentleman has passed on. My condolences to all the family.
