Bernadette grew up in Senegal and always knew she would dedicate her life to human rights. Over her 20 years with the UN, she was a force of nature and inspires so many of us to be thoughtful, patient, and, most of all, brave, just like her. Bernadette saved lives, and was the best of us working in human rights. Even in her passing, she will continue to be a light that reminds us to stand strong in our values, and have courage. She is survived by her beloved husband and two sons, and her cherished family across Senegal, the US, and the UN. You are welcome to take a moment to remember her and share a memory, photo, or note. Words cannot capture the depth of loss I feel at the passing of such a dear friend, mentor, and colleague. Bernadette was a force of nature and she was also a deep and gentle soul who cared so much about her family, her work, her friendships and her faith. For me Bernadette’s legacy is one of compassion, warmth and dedication to the true sense of humanity; I think that is why she worked so hard until the very end despite all of the personal pain and challenges she faced during her illness. She was determined to leave her mark on the world, leave the world a little more just, humane, and peaceful, this dedication and knowing how she touched countless lives will forever motivate me. And though I miss our daily chats, and I can no longer see you in person, I also find peace knowing that your spirit will live on in the wonderful memories that I hold so dear and because I know you were a woman of deep and unwavering strength and faith, I am confident that your journey onward is filled with peace, joy and laughter.
