Anne was born in Holland, MI to Edith and Mert de Velder, the youngest of three children. She went to Hope College in Michigan, and Columbia University in New York. She met her husband of 42 years, a dancer, John Dayger, in New York while working as a costume designer. Anne and John had one child, Catherine, and they travelled the world on tour with Lar Lubovitch Dance Company. Anne, John, and Catherine moved to Holland, MI where they lived for 7 years until Anne was recruited by the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. John and Anne moved to Champaign, where Anne headed the Costume Technology graduate program for 17 years. After retiring, Anne and John moved to Vancouver, WA to be closer to daughter Catherine, her husband Scot, and granddaughter Nova. I'm so sorry for your loss, for our loss. Anne was one of the calm centers of the glorious Clown College experience in '76. I thought you might appreciate this passage from my book about her and her teaching partner, Sarah Nash Gates: "Anne and Sally came from New York for costume classes. Beyond the basics, hand-sewing a button and running a sewing machine, they worked with anyone who wanted to make their own costume. Their specialty though was serenity. Every time I got on a sewing machine, wham, bam, the bobbin jammed, I Damned!—and one of our angels of the cloth shimmered into view, making the world right." Dave

I was trying to think of a favorite memory to share, and I realized ALL of them are my favorite. Every moment from the Hanging Gardens of Wally Wolvo to Thanksgivings on Willis Avenue.....were filled with love and laughter. I am so lucky to be your chosen family. I am so sorry to hear of Anne's passing. My heart goes out to you John, and your whole family. I will share a few memories from my graduate experience with Anne at UIUC: Anne, never a timid woman, taught me to embrace pressing clothes with a hearty amount of steam when using the iron. A lesson that continues to serve me well and one I pass on to others. I will always appreciate the lovely blue tailcoat she made for 44 Plays for 44 Presidents which suffered much abuse on stage - fainter hearts would have been mortified to see it so mistreated but her work weathered the storm. And, while I am sure you know them much better, I always enjoyed her stories from working with the circus and the pranks the clowns would play. I was always impressed by the tales of adventure (and misadventure) she shared with you, John. I admired Anne for her toughness, her humor and working for her respect. Love to you all.
