Nermin Badwi

March 8, 1996 - November 17, 2021

Nermin was a kind and passionate young woman who was in her final year of medical school. She was an advocate for better access to surgical care worldwide and founded an NGO for that purpose. She did her best to represent Egypt in Global Surgery Research and published several articles. She was a colleague one could rely on and trust. We met and worked together during several years within InciSioN. Even though I never had the priviledge to meet her in real life, we were friends! She always remembered my birthdays and sent me Eid wishes. We had frequent chats and I always loved when her name popped up in my notifications. If I had a project in which I could involve her, I always reached out to her so we can work together some more. She helped me significantly when I needed help on my way to Oxford and she did it without expecting anything in return. That is the kind of person she was. I will miss her! We had so much in commun, a similar culture, the same faith, the same passion and curiosity for research and a will to help our countries somehow. We also shared the loss of a parent as her mother died a few months after my father did. We supported each other through that as well. We fantasised about the day we would actually meet in real life and I am so sad that this dream will never come true. This online rememberance page is my little contribution to try and bring some comfort to her family. They probably don't know how important Nermin's role in Global Surgery was, how loved and respected she was in our community and the impact she had all over the world. I want them to know this part of her as well and therefore I would like to invite you to write about what you have shared with her and what you remember about her. I will then send this to her family. Thanks a lot Zineb

Those who remember you when you struggle to remember yourself, those who encourage you when you struggle to encourage yourself, those who think of you when you struggle to think of yourself, those who are kind to you when you struggle to be kind to yourself, those who see you amidst their own darkness when you sit in darkness yourself, those people are far and few between. Thank you Nermin, for the kindness you've shown me and others when we were blessed to have you amongst us. The world is a better place for having had you in it. Wish we could have crossed paths in real life, wish we could have kept you much longer love. May Allah give you an easy and pleasant journey and shower you with endless blessings. Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un

I am constantly blown away by Nermin's kindness and compassion, and her ability to see and bring out the best in people. Despite never having met each other, her trust in me allowed us to work together on challenging projects from across the world during a global pandemic. She was an incredible force on any team, bringing everyone together with her passion, knowledge and positivity. She knew how to make everyone feel valued, and demonstrated her consideration in many different ways - I received Diwali messages from her consistently over the time that we knew each other. She did all of this so sincerely - it was never performative, and never to ask for anything in return. Nermin has friends all over the world who appreciated the incredible person that she was, and she made a positive impact on a lot of lives. I am devastated to hear that I will never get the chance to meet her in person, but it is a testament to the kind of person that she was that I feel like I truly knew her. Thank you Zineb for making this page and allowing us to show Nermin's loved ones how valued she was.
