You can have a friend you may know all your life that doesn’t leave such an impact; or you can just meet a fellow parent on a soccer field who may change your life forever! This is how I met Mpthathisi. Our first conversations were deep about life, politics, religion. He had great intuition and vision about so many things in life, I honestly felt this man would go so far changing so many lives for the better. One thing he said to me in one of his visionary prolific conversations which has left an impact on me and rings in my mind often as a reminder of where we are today: “So many people sacrificed their lives in the past so that you and me can be standing here on a soccer field on this night having a deep conversation about life!” I will never forget those words. He left his mark on my life and my family’s; and on so many others. And today we have to say Goodbye! Thank you for your friendship and vision! Fly high with the angels!

If I had one word to describe you it would be connector. You connected with all my friends and you connected me to so many others. We met when I was at Wits and I was your designated driver for a while. This was a symbiotic arrangement since I didn’t have wheels of my own! You introduced me to Fish Eagle and Appletiser (if we were feeling rich). You also introduced me to so many of your friends. It was amazing that without missing a beat you helped negotiate the Lobola with my uncle to my American husband and his family. Every time I think of you I think about how lively and engaging you were and who can ever forget your laugh. I will miss you my friend. Rest In Peace.

Reunion. Giving Pindiwe company or keeping her company rather going to frequently checking her on the mattress. Running errands: fetching water, wood, this and that. Mr Mphathisi (as we sometimes called him) was an achiever from a very early age. From his entry level jobs he was already a business man who passionate about his family business. He grew to be an Entrepreneur who never got discouraged by any failure. He had a thick rhinoceros skin. He knew that in business every minute counts. He was not just intelligent but was filled with wisdom too. Whenever I erred he would lovingly scold me and then showed me the way. An empathy and generous friend to a fault. He managed to drive a successful business because amongst other skills he loved the people that worked for and cared for their families too.

Zizi respected and honoured his parents, aunts uncles and siblings. Such family unity was amazing. His sister became our friend. He was just humble & easy going with his friends and welcoming to strangers. But he was no walkover. He had clear boundaries. He always wore Rugby jerseys well I don't know how good he was at Rugby. I have so soccer kits too lol. Ebenesimilo nenhlonipho Nembheko. Ebehlonipha emazi umntu.

A husband and father who provided for his family in every way, and loved his wife dearly. Mphathisi's children were his best friend, my most recent memory is when they were doing the 25 push ups challenge together. I remember Mphathisi how handy he was in his household from diy to the kitchen, yes he had an apron so is his son. Pindiwe his dear wife always knew that she could rely on him. He was indeed an extraordinary family man.
