Michael Schoeb

January 7, 1978 - June 25, 2023

Michael Schoeb started his career in the Basel office, became the inspirational leader of the class leading PASS system engineering team and as one of the “founder members” of the Pall International office helped to establish its importance to the business. We all appreciated Michael for his very hands-on and loyal attitude towards all levels of people in the organization globally. His booming voice, laughter, and sheer presence over the years will be always fondly remembered by anyone that knew him.

Like most of us, it still feels unreal that Michael has passed away. Such a sad event, mostly for him but of course all my thoughts go to the family of Michael. It must be an enormous loss for his wife and kids, and so wish you all the best in these difficult times. I had the pleasure to work several years with Michael and it was from start to finish a great experience and a lot of fun. One of the most dedicated people I met in my career and as people manager always supporting his teams, every were in the world. He really contributed with his engineering capabilities to the bioprocessing equipment space as we know it today and is leaving his mark on our bioprocess industry. Sharing a picture of the last dinner I had with Michael in August 2022 during Achema in Frankfurt. It was a fun evening; I feel very sad about this news but thank you Michael for all these great memories. Mario

Michael was always spontaneous and full of surprise. It was some years ago; we were both having a dinner in Frankfurt and then we were walking by the Main River. He looks at the small cruise boat and says: “Claude, so many years I’m coming at Dreieich, and I never did a boat cruise on Main River, Let’s do it”. We start our cruise on the deck watching the city by night and a beautiful sky of stars. It’s sounds like an old couple enjoying time together. We were so many times in Dreieich and spending our evening together. This night was quite interesting as it was completely out of our routine, Great memory.

Michael was for me an engineer, a team leader, and a friend I met Michael in 2014 when Pall acquired ATMI. Michael was managing the Pall PASS engineering team. We worked together but at that time the PASS team was more focused on stainless steel systems. We, at ATMI realized the PALL-PASS and Single Use capabilities could create a powerful combination. Michael and I became really close in 2018 when we merged the Pall Biopharma and Single-Use divisions in Pall Biotech. We were asked to launch an Integrated Solutions Segment which included all the equipment and all the (single use) consumables. This wasn’t an easy task as the engineers in Michaels team and the salespeople in my team weren’t always collaborating in the most optimal way. We decided to travel to all regions where engineers and salespeople collaborated and lead by example, showing that the head of engineering and the head of sales could work together so everybody else should do the same. We travelled between 2018 and 2020 at least twice per year to Shanghai China, Pune India, Westborough US, Portsmouth UK, and Dreieich Germany to talk to a combined group of Engineers and salespeople. Michael was the expert leading the engineering discussions. We shared many hotel bars and we learned to know each other well. The integrated solutions initiative was successful. I think that a lot of Pall’s SUT success resulted from installed Integrated Solutions. During the trips I realized that Michael wasn’t only a great team leader, but he also took great care of his team. Pall isn’t famous for serving their employees good coffee. Wherever I arrived in a PASS office I realized that Michael took care that they had a Swiss Jura coffee machine making great espressos and cappuccinos. I quickly realized that when I need at Pall a good coffee, I need to look for a PASS office. Michael didn’t always think that salespeople where needed in the process. I think that when he was personally involved, he was right, as he was the best seller of the PASS engineering services. He always told me that it isn’t about what the customer wants or what we want. It is all about the process. The process will tell what equipment is required and that is what we will sell to the customer. Michael was in his heart an entrepreneur. The story I liked most was when during his studies he helped father who had a farm, to buy an embryo of an American milk cow. The cow, Donna became an award-winning cow who was still early 2021 in the Swiss newspapers as she gave an impressive amount of milk. Michael and I spend many times in hotel bars. At one night in the Hilton bar in Westborough we drank a Zinfandel, which was his favorite wine in US. We toasted on friendship. He couldn’t believe that colleagues could stay friends if one of them left the company. I didn’t agree. I left Pall in March 2021. We stayed in touch but not often enough. I wish I would have called more often or that he answered more frequent. Michaels leaves a big hole. I wish his partner and family a lot of strength in this difficult situation.

I remember when Michael and I had a 1:1 Meeting just before the first lockdown and sadly this was the last time I met him in person. I appreciate that he shared his personal experience of his family with me and he really understood the struggles I faced, when I returned from parental leave the first time. We had a nice and open conversation and I felt like he really cared about my personal development and helped me to find a function which is supporting my strengths. Still after many years he could remember when I exactly started with the PASS team, what really impressed me after his huge growth of responsibility.

One of my fondest memories was playing football alongside Michael in a “young PASS” v “old PASS” match being an “honorary PASS member”. Michael hosted off-site PASS celebrations to acknowledge the great work of the PASS team. Demonstrating what type of leader Michael was - technically superb and commercially astute - always with combined with great humanity. At times I would shake my head and smile Michael would speak in English, French and then German in the space of 10 min to different colleagues. Michael we will truly miss you. Dear Sarah, Lion and Angelina. My deepest condolences to all of you.

I'll never forget when Michael and Tina were visiting in January 2020, and they were looking for recommendations for something to do at the weekend before their flight. I invited them to our annual Burns Supper - a great annual event that my friends and I put on each year, which is a tribute to the great poet Robert Burns. We have ceremonial bagpipes, we toas the haggis, feast, and all take turns reading poetry. Michael came with his tartan scarf, socialized with everyone, and was a great sport in attempting a Scottish accent while reading a verse of Tam O'Shanter. I found one picture where he was in the background! Thanks Michael for being such a great sport, it was fun to reminisce on that memory in the years after!

This is so very sad. It was my privilege to work closely with Michael over the past 11 years. I loved his humor, his fairness and that he treated everyone with respect, no matter what level in the organization. He ignited followership by his personality and made people feel comfortable around him. What a kind and exceptional man. My heart goes out to his family, Sarah and kids. They must be heart broken and I hope they will find strength and comfort over time.
