Malcolm Robertson

March 16, 1948 - January 23, 2021

We’re sorry we can’t be together at this time to celebrate Malcolm’s life. There's no 'cup of tea' after a funeral service, but if you would like to share with us a memory, funny story or even a picture, the family would really love to hear how you will remember him.

We have lots of memories of Malcolm - all of which involve fun and laughter. He had such a zest for life. A high point for me (Peter) was completing the Great North run with Malcolm and Donald several years ago and going to see several bands together. Lesley remembers Malcom encouraging and supporting the church sports day team at Stirling University Every year and One time him getting dragged into the 4x400m relay having to wear borrowed shorts and trainers.as we were one person short. The pictures are from approx 1990 at Central YOuth ski weekends. On one occasion on a random ski outing to Glenshee Malcolm forgot his ski jacket. We can’t really remember how it was resolved but one thing for sure was that Malcolm did not spend the day in the car or cafe. We will remember Malcolm as a supporter and encourager with a real zest for life. His faithful service ito God in Central has been well recorded by others here and we echo them. He will be sorely missed

Malcolm had a gift of putting you at ease and I will miss Malcolm’s gentle spirit, caring nature and the genuine interest he had in those around him. He was always so ready to encourage, especially young people. He noticed the best in people. Ruth and Duncan’s most recent memory is of Malcolm and Barbara sharing their testimony in the church Youth Group (Malcolm was particularly proud of his presentation - with arrows included, symbolising their eye-contact to each other from the balcony to downstairs!) As a family, and personally, we will miss Malcolm so much. We thank God for his life and the impact he made living his life for Jesus

To celebrate his 60th Malcolm wanted to try something adventurous so we were given front seats when we went white water rafting in the Rockies. Other adventures included a sea plane flight, whale watching in the Pacific, canoeing on the River of Golden Dreams and zip-lining on Whistler Mountain. Great memories.

Mary and I remember some great holidays with Barbara and Malcolm. Malcolm and I both reached 60 years a few months apart so we all headed for the Canadian Rockies to celebrate. We spent two weeks touring in amazing scenery including two days on the Rocky Mountaineer Train. Here we are at the picturesque Lake Louise.

It was lovely renewing our relationship with our cousins in the past few years. Malcolm was so knowledgable and explained just how many times ‘removed’ we were as cousins. This shows us all meeting up with some American cousins in September 2019. Malcolm will be greatly missed by so many but our memories will keep him with us. God bless you all. Kate x

"I think I'll cross the bridge on the outside...fancy it?" "I do but Barbara won't let me...let's do it anyway!" I met Malcolm and Wise through the Walking Group-what a great couple, perfectly matched, perfectly paired. Dear Malcolm, I'm going to miss your cheeky smile, your glorious banter, your wonderful brain but most of all your sage advice when it came to the Christmas lunch spreadsheet. Sleep well you wonderful, wonderful man xx

Lots of great days out with Malcolm in the walking group. He was always so helpful and good fun, and made sure we always got a group photo to remember the day! Here he's in the background setting up the camera on his stick. He'll be so sadly missed.

So much a gent. I worked with Malcolm in the Gas Industry from the early 80’s, through to 2018. Malcolm always was the go to person if there was a technical issue or an understanding required of something or a problem needing solved. He would always give any one his time to explain or show how things should be done and within the appropriate guidelines. We always joked with him about his techie archives in his loft and garden shed. A true expert and professional. He was always up for a laugh and a joke and could give and take the office banter. So “ Jings” and all the best to a much missed colleague.

Malcolm was one of life‘s good guys, a gentleman, a real character, always in the same jovial mood. Him and I regularly put the world and of course the gas industry to rights over a coffee at work or a pint on a night out. So many happy memories, one of which were the many “futile” attempts to beat Malcolm to the cream cakes at the office charity coffee mornings. He will be sadly missed.. Alan ***************************************************** Malcolm and I worked together in the ‘Gas Industry’ for 38 years and it was a real pleasure knowing him. He was so dependable and always there for you, putting others before himself and more than happy to help. Recently I found myself saying ‘Jings, Crivens’.. an expression that we frequently heard from Malcolm in the office, this put a smile on our faces no matter how difficult our work day was. To me this will always be ‘Malcolm’s saying’ and I will repeat it with the fondest of memories. I have so many happy memories of Malcolm for which I am grateful and will always cherish. Sending you all our heartfelt condolences, Malcolm will be sorely missed.. Audrey x

The first time I met Malcolm was at Dock Street when he gave his very first leaving presentation for Anne Dempsey at Dock Street - he gave an amusing and sincere tribute. That is how he was - always the gentleman, always sociable, always supportive of others. He had many tales to tell about sailing, DIY, family activities as well as about work. He was a fine role model to many.

This picture was taken on 10th June, 2017 for a boat trip at Loch Katrine. This trip was organised for the Saturday Evening Fellowship group from our church (CBC) by Malcolm. Since there were some free spaces for other church memebers to join them, and I was blessed to have the privilege to join them. Malcolm and Barbara came to pick me up at my place that morning and that was the first time I saw them and got to know them from that day. I remembered that Malcolm even bought me the same Pensioner ticket price with the rest of the group (I was the only one not in the pension age), That was another extra treat of the day! We had a fantastic time together on the boat trip. I would never forget that special day, because I met a truly Christian couple whom were/are always showing the image of God : helpful, kind, generous, understanding and trustworthy. I have a lot to learn from you for being a good Christian brother Malcolm! I am deeply appreciated that God has led me into this church and got to know a special person like you. I missed you already but you will always stay in my heart with your kind smile and the geneorsity that you have shown to all of us. Thank you Barbara and the family for giving me the opportunity to express my feelings about Malcolm. May GOD be always with you all! Michelle

It really has been an honour to know and spend time with this great man. We have so many memories, but first that come to mind are the images of Malcolm having 40 winks on a rock during a hill walk lunch stop. Here he is sitting on a perfect rock. Malcolm was a joy to spend time with, always keen to listen, and always so cheerful. We are so glad to have spent time with Barbara and Malcolm just near the end of last year in Forres for lunch, which he so enjoyed. You all did him proud today with your tribute and wonderful recording of "Will your anchor hold". He would be so proud of you all. We miss you Malcolm. David & Elspeth

Malcolm always enjoyed a good walk, as for the company, he managed to put up with us lot. He used to balance his camera on his walking pole which he then stuck in the ground, set the self-timer for 10 seconds then find himself a space within the group, it was fun to watch. He will be sorely missed.

This photo always puts a smile on my face. I'd often find myself positioned next to Malcolm during meals out. Food would arrive to Malcolm rubbing his tummy whilst slowly scanning over everyone else's plates, all whilst wearing a big grin. I absolutely loved it and it's something that I have inherited. Though humour is rife through the Robertson/Niven families, I always admired Malcolm's stoicism, kindness, warmth, empathy and compassion. The pearls of 'Malcy Wisdom' are still talked about to this day! Though we were separated by half a world, I am so incredibly lucky to have an abundance of stories, moments and experiences with him. Most were hilarious, but often they were uplifting, reassuring and happy times. I've thought often over the last week how best to pay tribute to Malcolm. To be more like him, seems to be most fitting. The world would be a much better place if we all were. I will forever be heartbroken we never got one more time together, but I will always cherish the moments we did have. An incredible uncle, an absolute gentleman and a stellar man. Infinite love to you, Malcolm.

So many good walks, so much laughter ,Malcolm always in the thick of it, literally, with his trusty stick and his camera. We walkers had a scale we invented for measuring mud. This walk was deemed a 9/10. Another fond memory, which always makes me smile was walking at Spinkey Den and having to cross the stream several times, a winter walk, the stream nearer a raging torrent, Malcolm standing in the middle of the stream, helping the ladies over, keeping everyone safe. I remember joking to him, "Now Malcolm, you should be throwing down your cloak for us", and his merry quip," If I had one, I would". He was great fun, Barbara too, great to walk with and chat to, good humoured, and really cared that everyone was OK. If you had a fence or a stile to climb, a river to cross, he was always there to lend a hand. He will be sorely missed. Wish we could be there for you Barbara, but be assured Malcolm and yourself are never far from our thoughts.

We came to Dundee in the late 90s, seeing Malcom and Barbara regularly at the Craigiebank home fellowship. There were several faithful and fun members in that group whose characters and faith impact us to this day. Donald’s tribute and the family’s descriptive words read by Jim are so accurate and paint a fuller picture than we had of a man we will always remember. True to say too, that he talked often of his family and having never met his sons or their wives or grandchildren, we know all their names. More recently, our lives were impacted by “team Malcolm and Barbara” in connection with our flat which we took back from years of tenants not that long ago. A memory which will endure is of a day where we had so much clearing out to do and so little time with a rented van to run up and down to the tip so we could make things habitable for our family that summer. Malcolm went home and got his tools and quietly built up the bunkbeds for our boys, singlehandedly and with zero fuss - and it was much appreciated, probably more than he realised. Regular emails followed in the time since as he regularly checked on things while we’re away, gave input on new windows and frequent updates on work in the building as well as any mail. His love of genealogies and history was a recent discovery as he gave me a spare copy of a book on Dundee’s history when we got into conversation over a Burns supper in Rescobie Avenue last year. What a great example of a man of God who lived a life of no regrets, and a man we can look forward to seeing again as believers in the God whose promises never fail.

Unfortunately I don't think I have got any photos of Malcolm but I have a permanent picture of Malcolm on my head, dressed up as a true Scots man with his red kilt, navy jacket , bow tie and the biggest smile on his face enjoying a good ceilidh. I have many fun and great memories of Malcolm and Barbara at many wedding Ceilidhs and Burns night at teen ranch. Malcolm was so friendly and cheery He always took the time to speak to us every Sunday during the many years we spent at CBC. I loved that Malcolm had a similar sense of humour as mine and we could always exchange a little cheeky comment (or two!) with each other. Johnny has very found memories of being part of the building advisory group with Malcolm . We will treasure all these memories and will look forward to the day that we will all be together again!

I will always be grateful to Malcolm for his thoughtfulness, kindness and encouragement. He always had a kind word to say and made you feel he was genuinely interested in you. He was ever ready to help out, whether it was stewarding in church, dealing with property issues or manning a car park at a special service. As was said in the beautiful tributes at the Service of Thanksgiving his attention to detail was so much appreciated. I will really miss him. My thoughts and prayers are with Barbara and all the family at this time. Thank you for giving us this opportunity to share with you.

I have such great memories of both Barbara and Malcolm growing up, but a more recent one always sticks in my mind. When I moved to Dundee for university, Barbara and Malcolm immediately took me under their wing, calling to make sure I was okay and taking me to see the Law! They invited both me and my friend for dinner one night, to what was possibly the first decent (healthy!) meal either of us had eaten in weeks. It was so important to me that I had family in a scary new city that not only cared for me, but for anyone else I could bring along! I remember Malcolm as funny and chatty, always asking about others and caring beyond belief. He will be so missed. Rebecca x

Although this isn’t a picture of Malcolm it reminded us of the walks we enjoyed when our children were younger -this particular walk had a typically funny ending as we tried to return to the cars. ‘Macorom & Brabra’ were great favourites as babysitters who sat through endless reruns of The Sound of Music which when we hear any of the ubiquitous songs remind us of these great times. Our family benefited greatly from Malcolm’s (and Barbara’s) generosity with their time, self-sacrifice and encouragement. Our lives were enriched by knowing a Godly, gracious and giving gentleman. With all our love, the Watson family.

Malcolm had a great sense of fun and was a great story teller. When we met at the share club he always had a story to tell of DIY jobs or events with the family. He was a great family man and I know he had a lot to do with his grandchildren whom he often spoke of. We also enjoyed his trips with the gassie football squad and at the Edinburgh Festival over the years. We had some memorable times and adventures on these trips. He will be greatly missed. I attach some pictures of him with us in Seville.
