There is no simplification of the effect your presence has had in my life. Though through tears, in an effort to write a fitting tribute, I find years of love, loyalty, and wisdom replaying in my mind's eye. I believe it’s only fair that every single person remembers you at your most radiant.
I promise I forever will.
My brother, you gave me my confidence. There’s no over exaggeration of how much I looked up to you. In my formative years, I‘d always try and understand how you were always so calm. A man of extreme beauty and talent, matured so quickly and held such a firm grip on your priorities. You only ever reassured, never doubted. You never left me. You’ll never leave me.
Your humility is something I would try and emulate for years to come. I don’t remember one brag or boast, from someone with heaps to do so with.
If it wasn’t your fashion I was trying to copy, it was your apparent nonchalance. Even that, I would learn was only directed at matters you knew shouldn’t trouble us. You never wanted us to stress. You never let drama reach the forefront of our minds.
All I remember is laughter and play.
I remember following you to parties, and watching in awe as several people would greet you on entry. You made a name for yourself as a figure of compassion and accessibility - everyone could see that. You truly could be everywhere, but you were never hungry for attention. I hope that it is forever apparent all the qualities I learnt from you. You let the fun be fun, and when it came time for family, nothing would separate you. I thank God for the example you have set your brothers.
You were the first with an afro, the first with dreads, the first to shave your head.
The first to wear your clothes baggy, the first to wear traditional as casual,
the first to publicly embrace your talents.
You are the blueprint.
You taught me that the physical gifts we have been given are only a pale reflection of the extent of our power. You showed me that there is always more beneath the surface, and watching you fight a war just to keep your loved ones in a better place, has set the tone for all of our futures.
You walked with me around the hospital as if everything was okay. And I see what you were trying to show me now.
Everything will always be okay.
With the love of God, and the love of family and friends, you live on.
