Thomas Mateides

August 10, 1970 - March 7, 2020

Tommy passed away after a long and brave battle with Cancer. He left behind a heart-broken family that will miss his quirky sense of humour and his amazing personality. We hope to share your memories and messages with his young son in the years to come. We hope your messages will help him to see his father from his friend’s and his family’s perspective and to help him understand that the spirit lives on in those whose lives we touch as well as those we leave behind. Thank you.

To summarise my wonderful memories with Tommy in a short paragraph is near impossible to do but what I can say is he was most definitely the brother I always wanted and would always be there for me when I needed him - from saving me when my car rolled down Lonsdale Drive crashing into a tree in the cold, wet night (and we all know how much Tom hated the cold, dark and wet!!) to always lending me an ear if I needed to moan or vent about something. I miss him putting his arm around my shoulder and giving me a gentle squeeze whilst saying "What's up babe?" to him teasing me incessantly - I would remind him of an air hostess with the scarf I wore or my summer sandals looked like something an Eastern European bird would wear! My most treasured memory however is being his birthing partner at the birth of Rafael whilst Nina slept through her epidural. Tom and I watched My Big Fat Greek Wedding and he eventually lay down on the hospital floor for a rest with his padded jacket, zipped up hood and his bag as a pillow - we had a good giggle that night! I'll never forget his face the moment Rafi arrived - he was awestruck and overwhelmed with joy that the long awaited moment arrived and that he was now a father. I only wished he let me take a photo of that moment but he asked me not to and I respected that. He always made me feel welcomed and loved and he has now left me heartbroken. He definitely lives on in his precious son and it is comforting to know that by doing so he will always be with us. Love you forever Bro! xxx
