The SOC

January 24, 1997 - September 24, 2021

When we met the SOC, we thought it was great. We had dreams of getting the pew pew map we always wanted. We thought, "Who wouldn't love having all the buttons and knobs to stop bad things and the remit to fight evil?". We thought we'd have all the data. The world was ours. Then, we met the SIEM and a bunch of certifications we had to go get - both things we kind of thought were awful, but didn't want to tell anyone. Twenty plus years later, we saw it for what it was - we just needed cloud, better architecture, and security analytics. Once the SOC knew that we knew this, it became hard for the SOC to live with itself. We will miss it dearly.

The SOC will be missed dearly for all the joy and budget it created over the years: large screens, rows of seats (like in our classrooms), 7 people to fill a single 24/7 position, specialized teams and toys … made us all feel like the cyber warriors we always dreamt of when playing Hackers on the C64. Now the SOC is gone, and we may miss it a little. But then perhaps not.
